Salsa Pulled Pork

Finally, the pork!!

You guys have been asking about this pork ever since I first showed it on Instagram Stories a few weeks ago and I’m super excited to finally share it with you today, along with our review of the new AmazonFresh service. As probably everyone knows, we are big fans of pork shoulder in this house. I most always have one in our deep freezer “just in case” (along with bacon, cardamom buns and a few frozen whole chickens). This salsa pulled pork is so delicious and only requires two ingredients and a slow cooker. You guys are going to love it!

The groceries I used to make this meal came from AmazonFresh and I am excited to share with you guys about them today. AmazonFresh is a grocery delivery service that comes in speedy time with super fresh ingredients (hence the name…hah) — I made this order at 9pm on a Sunday night and my groceries were neatly by my door in reusable refrigerated boxes at 6:20am the next morning. That’s hard to beat, in my opinion. Everything was incredibly fresh and made it really easy to throw everything in the slow cooker before I left to drop Grayson off at school.

I also felt good about the prices. This 2.5 lb pork shoulder just cost a little over $10 — and we got a few meals out of this! Incredible.

So, to make this easy peasy weeknight meal, all you need to do is (literally!) dump a jar of salsa over a pork shoulder in your slow cooker. Set the timer for 10 hours on low. Walk away. Breathe in the delicious pulled pork scent all day that will permeate your house.  Shred with a fork at dinner time. Pile into corn tortillas. Stuff your face. It’s that easy.

I made this with medium heat salsa and both boys ate it no problem. It really wasn’t spicy at all; it just had very good flavor. I highly recommend this pork for any summer gatherings with friends or just a plain ol’ Taco Tuesday. It also freezes great and *I think* leftovers would go really well mixed into mac and cheese. Just sayin’. 😉

Yum! Can’t wait to try! I recently made your slow cooker pulled pork nachos with chimichurri and that was so so good! Question about Amazon delivery- how was the quality of the meat? I know you’ve said before that it really matters to you where your meat comes from. It does to me too. Does Amazon have good options? Thanks!

We both felt like the quality was actually really great and I just made another order yesterday for more pork shoulder. 😉 I don’t believe it is pasture raised, but it still seemed like excellent quality to us and is something we will continually order.

Have you made it in the Instant Pot? Seems easier than searing in one pan and transferring to a slow cooker. Suggestions for time?

I haven’t but I bet it would work great! I can actually sear in my slow cooker so it’s no added work for me there, but I included that tip since many crock pots don’t have that function. I will try this in the IP soon and report back!

I would love to hear about that as well! My husband tried making a slow-cooker meat dish in the Instant Pot recently and it didn’t work all that well. Anything that wasn’t submerged in liquid was super dry. I’d love to hear your tips.

Hi Jenna! I’m on an ELR cooking roll and am so glad you’re blogging simple recipes!! I eat a mostly-vegetarian diet and so haven’t ever really learned to cook meat, but I am trying to cook meat 1-2x/week for my kids/husband because my oldest daughter is so darn picky I have reached a point of being willing to try anything. This recipe seemed simple, so I added it to our weekly meal plan. I was already confused by the ingredient list (WHAT IS PORK SHOULDER?? the meat guy at Publix told me I was actually looking for something labeled Boston butt? Not sure still that I wasn’t misled?!) and apparently I missed the trimming step, not that I want to spend any more time touching the meat. Anyway, I also missed step one and simply dumped the meat into my crockpot with salsa and cooked for 10 hours, then put it into my family’s burritos. According to my meat thermometer, it was plenty cooked, and the meat-eating family members still devoured this (with exception of oldest daughter, but don’t take THAT personally). I’m guessing the searing step would have added more flavor? Is that the idea? Must learn to read recipes better…

Anyway, I just thought I’d throw this comment out in hopes that it is helpful for someone else who forgot step one. It will still turn out!!

hey friend! boston butt is the same thing as pork shoulder. 😉 And yes, searing adds loads of flavor but it sounds like it still was a hit so I am glad! xx
