Okay. I know I don’t normally post cocktails on this blog but this one really needs it’s own special section and recognition. Seriously. Two days ago (I’m losing all track of time), Morgan and I made blue cheese burgers, a yummy Cape Cod salad with apples, cranberries and feta, and……blackberry margaritas.
The burgers were fabulous but the real star of the evening were the blackberry margaritas.
In my former life, I’d been banned from Tequila. However, all bets are off in Texas and I’ve rekindled my love for the wondrous juice that hails from that spiky little plant in the desert. Wine in Sonoma? What’s that? Where’s that? I don’t even know who I am anymore.
Okay fine. So I’ve been drinking margaritas here because I decided I needed to better be on Almanzo’s level. You know, with all the pain pills and stuff. Don’t judge me!! Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Just please make these margaritas for your next party….or happy hour. Morgan and I were shocked at how utterly delicious they turned out and each drank two. But that’s off the record…like I said, all bets are off.
Blackberry Margaritas
Serves 2
1 shot triple sec
3 shots tequila
1/2 shot black current liquor
1/2 cup blackberries
1 6-ounce can limeade
1 cup crushed ice
Combine the all ingredients in a large pitcher. Using a big wooden spoon, muddle the blackberries so they are pretty much all crushed up in the drink. Serve with additional blackberries and a lime wedge.
Do you have a tequila horror story? Let’s hear it.
Sarah for Real
September 8, 2010 at 10:51 amMy horror stories revolve around gin mostly. I think I have the right chemical composition for tequila.
Me and tequila, we are good friends 😀
Sharon
September 8, 2010 at 10:54 amNo tequila horror stories…never have been a big margarita fan, to tell the truth, But I might have to try this version. Also you realize we need the recipes for the rest of this meal too, right? 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 11:02 amI’m not a huge alcohol fan, but even I will admit that these look awesome!
They sound like something I need to ship up for my parents when they come to visit me 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 11:06 amMmmm those look delicious. I once had a blackberry mojito at a restaurant in Northampton MA that was great. Blackberries are great for fruity drinks that aren’t toooo sweet.
Jessica @ How Sweet
September 8, 2010 at 11:10 amMargs are my favorite drink and I don’t have a horror story behind tequila – I hope I never do because I will probably not want to drink them then!
Ashley
September 8, 2010 at 11:10 amYou really, really don’t want to hear the gory, nasty details of my tequila horror story. I promise. Just know that I haven’t touched the stuff in a good 3 years.
Megan
September 8, 2010 at 11:10 amLet’s put it this way…I can’t think of a tequila story that isn’t a horror story 🙂
Heather
September 8, 2010 at 11:11 amAlright, now I have to make those too. Maybe I’ll make the Migas for lunch instead of breakfast and serve the margaritas with it!
Tequila horror story…hmmm…I think the best (or worst depending on how you look at it) involved a night in college where I was dressed in velvet from head to toe (I think it was around the holidays, please don’t judge my fashion sense, I was young) and ended up passed out on the floor of my sorority house bathroom. Which my friend was kind enough to take pictures of, nice.

September 8, 2010 at 11:12 amI heart margaritas! They’re my favorite beverage 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 11:19 amWe don’t talk about that night, okay?
P.S. These looks super delicious, super boozy, and super easy! Score.

September 8, 2010 at 11:20 amOh yes, I have a horror story. I used to love tequila sunrises and one night I was making them way too strong at a party at my downstairs neighbor’s apt. Long story short, I had to be carried up stairs to our apartment where I ended up throwing up on our carpet, knocking over a bookcase and crying out, “I want to die I want to die!” Needless to say, I haven’t had a tequila sunrise since 🙂 BUT I do still love tequila plain or in margs!! 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 11:22 amTequila and I have such a love/ hate relationship!!! I always come running back with open arms!! 🙂 I cant wait to try the blackberry recipe!

September 8, 2010 at 11:23 amoh, i have a wonderful tequila horror story, but i think it is probably not appropriate for blog comments. let’s just say it involved several shots of patron, a california lawyer, a room at the hilton, and an unfortunately timed response to that amount of liquor. yeah.
ironically, tequila remains my absolute favorite liquor. try jalapeno tequila sometime if you can find it! my life has never been the same since that discovery.
Kacy
September 8, 2010 at 11:23 amTequila is really the only liquor I can still tolerate. I quite enjoy it.
Whiskey on the other hand?! Eek.
Shelly
September 8, 2010 at 11:24 amI don’t have a tequila horror story- mine involve Taaka and Hawaiian Punch, Yaeger Bombs, and Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. Never never never again for any of those!

September 8, 2010 at 11:24 amThe boyfriend, his mother, and I took a an all-inclusive trip to Mexico a couple of years ago. I don’t drink beer, and one evening my drink of choice was solely tequila shots. In between I was just drinking glasses of Sprite. My boyfriend however, was drinking beer AND taking a shot of tequila whenever I took one.
I was functional by the end of the night. My poor boyfriend however got tremendously ill and wound up with a horrible illness that knocked him out for the rest of the vacation.
His mom and I got in some good bonding, at least.
Marie
September 8, 2010 at 11:26 amI loooooove tequila and margaritas! When we make them, we put honey on the rim with salt…it adds a little bit of sweetness…fresh mangos and mango juice is delicious in a margarita too!!! oooo and blood oranges…I just love margaritas in general.
Pam
September 8, 2010 at 11:26 amThose look delicious! Tequila and I are usually good friends, but I did once drank a few too many margaritas at a happy hour celebrating the end of my freshman year of college. My parents came to move me out of my dorm that night and it was not a pretty sight. Let’s just say there were no elevators and my stair-climbing skills weren’t at their peak…

September 8, 2010 at 11:28 amYes. It begins in Mexico and ends with both me AND my husband having a severe case of the voms. I hope that paints a pretty picture for you.

September 8, 2010 at 11:28 amSweet! I think the black berry margarita sounds awesome, maybe only one for me though, hehe. I also have a Watermelon Margarita recipe that I use a lot. Hey- Trainers, can drink too ya know! 🙂 wink-wink.
As far as a teqilla story, I am actually a fun-happy drinker. Thank god. 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 11:29 amUgg. Joes Cuervo is like a mean boyfriend. It’s all warm and fuzzy in the beginning but when you let your guard down and get too close, you end up crying and swearing and wishing you’d never met him in the first place. If I had only known it was going to end so badly!
I haven’t touched the stuff since.

September 8, 2010 at 11:32 amLet’s just say: pre-prom tequila, hot date, never made it out of limo. End of story.

September 8, 2010 at 11:37 amIt’s not a horror story but a comedy: I ended up on stage with a friend singing Britney Spears’ “(You Drive Me) Crazy” at a karaoke bar like I was a singing superstar. There may have a moment when I kissed said friend, too… 😮
Katie
September 8, 2010 at 11:43 amtequila is my best friend — no horror stories, and no crazy nights that i blame on the “t word” just lots and lots of love.

September 8, 2010 at 11:43 amAhh. Tequila horror stories. Yikes! The most memorable one was this past spring when West Virginia beat UK in the elite 8 during March Madness. As a diehard Louisville Cardinals fan, I HATE UK so after they lost, my friends and I had a big celebration. Needless to say, I ended up literally SLEEPING on the kitchen floor that night. Oops! 😉

September 8, 2010 at 11:44 amI yelled out across a crowded public place, “Hey! That kid was on Hannah Montana!” …and he totally wasn’t. For shame….

September 8, 2010 at 11:44 amI have too many tequila horror stories from college to name…but, coincidentally enough, last night I was dragged to our local bar for $3 wine night (ok, maybe not dragged…) when suddenly my drinking companion decided to buy patron shots. Gahh. Needless to say, I’m not feelin’ too hot in the cubical today.
Tina
September 8, 2010 at 11:44 amSo….do you think a blackberry margarita would go well with the sushi I’m making my husband bring me after I have this baby? Because margs are my favorite adult beverage and I might dream about one of these until I give birth now. 😉
Heather (Heather's Dish)
September 8, 2010 at 11:52 amfirst, how did you know i could use 12…err…2…of these right now? sounds amazing!
tequila horror story…in college, my first drinking experience and the only time i’ve ever been hungover, was a friend’s 21st birthday party. i drank 4 Smirnoff Raspberry twists because i thought they were basically soda. wrong. then, i was so tipsy off of that, that my roomie convinced me to take 4 shots of tequila AT ONCE out of a measuring cup. KLASSY.
let’s just say i was that girl in the alley vomiting all night. never again.

September 8, 2010 at 12:03 pmYou mean, te-KILL-ya? I have a story involving yummy pitchers of Long Island Tea at a hotel bar called Tingles in Charleston. Most of the night was wicked fun, but it did not end well. My stomach still turns just thinking about it – 20 years later! I haven’t touched the stuff since that night.
Christina
September 8, 2010 at 12:08 pmOh Tequila! Jose and I got into a fight and I lost. He left me on the side of the road to die. He’s a jerk and we no longer speak. I should upgrade to better tequila. The Blackberry Margaritas look delicious.

September 8, 2010 at 12:10 pmCinco de Mayo. $1 tequila shots (read: CHEAP tequila). The tequila literally came back up as I was swallowing it.And then my throat burned for the rest of the night. No bueno.

September 8, 2010 at 12:20 pmI banned myself from tequila. Because it was not a good experience. Now I can only have it in small doses — but it has to be reposado o antiguo. Silver still makes me gag.
And on that note: never take shots of tequila. It never leads to good things. Although, I’m still considering whether or not I could pass off this blackberry margarita as “juice” in class today…
Meredith @ An Epic Change
September 8, 2010 at 12:25 pmoh tequila…. the summer I lived in Guadalajara, Mexico we took a bus to Tequila, Mexico, about an hour away. there we toured the José Cuervo factory and let me just say: thank God we had a bus to take us home! before you leave Austin, go to Iron Cactus for a tequila flight (tequila tasting) if you really want to enjoy tequila again!
or Chuy’s for happy hour $3 mango margaritas and unlimited chips & queso! (that’s where the Bush twins were arrested for underage drinking… specifically the one on Barton Springs)
Emily @ For Sweets Sake
September 8, 2010 at 12:26 pmoh tequila. How I love thee<3 I've had many fun nights with tequilla and some nights I'll can't remember but my friends will never let me forget 🙂 best tequilla night: taking shots with my roommate, then going to the Penn State homecoming parade and proposing to a guy in Dunkin Donuts. I called it off 5 minutes later when he ran away from me and my roommate. It just wasn't meant to be.

September 8, 2010 at 12:27 pmUpside-down margaritas (lean your head back while someone pours in tequila and mixer) is a bad idea on its own. Doing one on an empty stomach before a toga party at your friend’s house is a TERRIBLE idea. Blacked out in 10 minutes, frolicked around the party (pictures tell me this), managed to break my friends’ toilet seat while bringing it all back up and woke up at 4am not remembering any of this on a random mattress in someone’s room.
I still enjoy real margaritas, though.
Jackie
September 8, 2010 at 12:37 pmI recently decided, before moving day, that double tequilla and pineapple juice was a good idea to drink all night at my friend’s Bachelorette Party. The next morning I woke up, still kind of drunk, tossed my cookies, and “helped” my boyfriend move all of our stuff. I’m lucky I have such a nice boyfriend because he wasn’t annoyed with me being a bad helper at all! 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 1:06 pmYes! I spent my 21st birthday at a Mexican restaurant and they brought over a birthday shot of tequila. It was my very first shot ever and I took it straight down, and then it and my entire dinner came straight up and all over the table.
I replace any alcohol in drink recipes with vodka and I’m fine. 🙂

September 8, 2010 at 2:34 pmMmmm tequila…what started out as a fun round of shots quickly turned into body shots with friends and ended with my sister and I fighting over who got to eat the worm at the bottom of the bottle. Touche Jose, you win again!

September 8, 2010 at 7:04 pmI love a good margarita! I also love tequila but it hasn’t always loved me. September 8, 2010 at 7:33 pmOh gosh, I’ve had pleeenty of tequila-inspired stories + nights gone awry (prob not a good thing?). My fav would include me falling dead asleep at 8pm and waking up at 3am unsure of why I had never made it out to the bars with the rest of my roommates. Ah, college. 😉
Janna (janna's keeping it real)
September 8, 2010 at 8:34 pmI had a lot of out of town clients at my old job, and one night a week when the manager would come out, we would usually go out to eat/have a couple drinks….
One particular night, after a Margarita my coworker decides we should have a shot of patron…one led to ~4 more, a taxi ride to Dave and busters, video games and pool until wee hours of the night… I woke up the next morning in my hotel room with an apple eaten to the core sitting on my nightstand (healthy drunk eating, obviously), an overflowing bucket of Dave and Buster tickets on the coffee table, and a D&B card (which I later found out had a large amount of money still loaded on it…Apparently, according to the messages I left on my roomies voice mail, I was struggling to get the guitar hero game to work and just kept loading more and more money onto my card. Lovely.
Clearly not one of my finer moments. I’d like to say I was “immature”, but I was 25!!!!… Breakfast the next morning with the coworkers consisted of zero talking, and lots of dry toast….

September 8, 2010 at 8:48 pmTequila and I don’t get along. Since one night of I Never or some ridiculous college game when we were doing double tequila shots for anything “I never done”. September 9, 2010 at 5:15 amTequila and I don’t get along… Every time I drink tequila it’s a horror story.
I don’t know why, but Tequila makes me allergic to my clothes. You know that song? Tequila makes her clothes fall off? Yea, I’m pretty sure that was written about me, because it happens EVERY TIME. No other alcohol affects me like that.
So I stay as far away from tequila as I can… for the sake of whats left of my dignity.

September 9, 2010 at 9:52 amTequila is one hard liquor that I don’t have a horror story about, unless you count my 21st birthday, in which tequila just happened to be one of many types of alcohol consumed, so I’m not counting it. 🙂

September 9, 2010 at 10:16 amHaha yeah tequila and I aren’t really friends. I generally stay away from it unless I go get Mexican food. There I will probably get a margarita! I took a shot of tequila for my birthday and that wasn’t bad but no more than one tequila shot or I’ll be under the table!!

September 10, 2010 at 12:07 pmwhite tequila shots, too many, lost consciousness, fortunately at home with roomates, multiple episodes of vomiting that I don’t even remember but friends cleaned up, woke up not remembering prior 12 hours of my life, though slept only 4 of those, and finally, one final vomit when I stood up after waking, and that I do remember. Now the smell of white tequila makes me feel sick. A very good thing!

February 22, 2011 at 12:18 amsomehow i missed this post when you first put it up, but rachel wilkerson just linked it on her blog. so now i’m left dreaming about tequilla being my friend, because these look wonderful.
my worst story with tequilla would be my 21st birthday. my friend bought me a marg, and threw up into the cup in the middle of the bar before i’d even drank half of it. you’d think it would be time to call it a night, but i had the mind to excuse myself to the bathroom and returned to the dance floor a new woman.
but i have a couple stories from before that where i threw up at 2 and 3pm the day after a tequilla night. eesh. tequilla is either your best friend or your worst enemy.

February 22, 2011 at 4:57 pmYES! I do, in fact. On my 21st birthday I went to a Mexican restaurant and had my first (legal) drink. They brought me over a free Tequila shot for my birthday. I had never taken a shot before and my stomach was not prepared to have the alcohol in it so quickly. It went down…and immediately came back up. All over the rest of my food and the table. I am strictly a vodka girl!
