I just pulled my first batch of holiday cookies out of the oven and I have a huge cheesy grin on my face.
December is my very favorite month for many reasons, cookies obviously being one of them. As a baker of sorts, I wait patiently (hah) all year for this month so I can let my cookie obsession loose.
Oh, it’s going to be crazy, friends. Get ready.
I stand before you today though with a plee for requests! Is there a favorite holiday cookie that you’d like to see on the blog?
I need ideas.
I shall not bake in vain.
Help me help you.
Asking me what my favorite cookie is is like asking me who my favorite child is.
Just kidding!
I have always loved gingerbread though. The real, old fashioned stuff. The gingerbread that you know that Pa walked back in the snow from the general store to bring to Laura and Mary on Christmas.
I also love rosettes, and every December my mom and I baked them in the shapes of stars and snowflakes on the traditional rosette iron that my grandmother had passed down to us. When the cookies had puffed up into a golden caramel color, we quickly peeled them off the iron and then dusted them quickly with powdered sugar as white as snow.
On that note, we start tomorrow. Be here bright and early with your game faces on. I don’t want any whining or tears.
There’s no crying in cookie baking.
Shannon
December 1, 2010 at 12:35 pmI would like the recipe of the cookie on your blog today. Looks great and we have a annual cookie making day with friends this Sunday. This looks like a perfect one to make! Thanks

December 1, 2010 at 12:40 pmI couldn’t have said it better myself – I loveeee cookies. Baking them, eating them, eating them while baking them, and giving them away. My sister and mom get together every year just to bake Christmas cookies – the same exact ones every year. I would love to share my favorite recipe with you blog but don’t have the recipe on hand! How long will you be cookieblogging for?
I might actually make an addition to our annual cookie list (if my mom and sister let me!). I made your Bohemian Wedding cake a few weeks ago and had extra molasses on my hands so I made some ginger-spice cookies. They were a hit! I highly recommend them.
and I guess I have to say it.. I love your blog! It’s absolutely adorable. I’m sure I’ll be back everyday to see what cookies your readers are sharing. Happy baking and holidays!

December 1, 2010 at 12:45 pmWhat’s your favorite gingerbread cookie recipe? I have tried a couple of different ones, and sometimes they turned out hard as a rock, and others they turned out softer. Can’t wait to see all the cookies to come!

December 1, 2010 at 12:48 pmJenna, this post made me cry. My grandmother passed away a few weeks ago and was a fantasic baker. One of her specialities was rosette cookies. After reading that you are planning to make them, I’ve been inspired to try them too. I’m not sure they’ll be as good as grandmas, but I am sure she’ll be looking down at me making them and smiling.

December 1, 2010 at 12:50 pmI’m so excited I don’t even know where to start! There are so many delicious options. I’m okay with having this problem.

December 1, 2010 at 12:51 pmMy favorite cookies around the holidays are anise toast cookies. I don’t know why, but it’s the only time my mom ever bakes these. They are subtle and not overly sweet, with a distinct flavor. They are the best warm and soft out of the oven with crispy edges!
Estela @ Weekly Bite
December 1, 2010 at 12:52 pmHmmmm…. this is a tough one. Picking my favorite cookie is hard!
For me, it all goes back to simple shortbread. That does it for me every single time. 🙂

December 1, 2010 at 12:52 pmMy mom always asks what my favorite cookie is so she can make it when I come home but I can never answer her. My brothers always request kiss cookies which are a staple for my family and Christmas. Last year, my mom and I made snickerdoodles but it was a different recipe (than the ones I’ve normally had) involving almond extract and lemon. It was with that cookie that I got hooked on the almond flavoring and have been searching for the perfect almond flavored cookie every since. Any suggestions? I’d love to bring a recipe home to bake with my mom this Christmas!
Jess
December 1, 2010 at 1:37 pmOooh yes! Almond-flavored cookies, please!

December 1, 2010 at 12:55 pmI don’t know if these qualify as Christmas cookies, but I would like to see a recipe for rainbow cookies, they are also called tricolor cookies or seven layer cookies. As a kid I would get them all the time from the Italian bakeries in NYC but they do not seem to exist at all down here in San Antonio 🙁

December 1, 2010 at 2:46 pmOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my roommate in college used to bring those back every time she went home to NYC for the holidays; they are AMAZING. I would love to have a recipe for those as well; good suggestion!

December 1, 2010 at 12:58 pmYay for cookies and specifically holiday cookies! In my family we’re big bon bon people (an assortment of cookie/cake/peanut butter balls covered in chococlate!) However, if I were throwing out a suggestion to see on your blog – how about good ol’ fashioned snickerdoodles! Nothing says “holidays” like snickerdoodles – or maybe holiday bark! Can’t wait to see what you make.

December 1, 2010 at 1:02 pmNot sure if this is considered Christmas cookie, but I love Conga bars or 7-layer bars as some call them.
OH, I know!! How about those Christmas cookies in the grocery store that come in a bag and are slightly gingerbready, but not full-blown (almost a cross between sugar and gingerbread) and come in diffrent shapes with crystalized sprinkles on them. Please tell me you know what I’m talking about!!! Could you, perhaps, re-create?!? I would love you forever and spend my days voting for you on Project Food blog.
Did I just blog bribe you? 😉

December 1, 2010 at 1:05 pmJenna-this post made me cry. My grandma passed away a few weeks ago and was a terrific baker, and famous for her rosette cookies. You’ve inspired me to try your recipe and recreate them. I am sure it won’t be the same but I want to try.
Rainbow cookies are something else that remind me of her that I would love to see on the blog. These are layer cookies with three colors of cake, covered in chocolate and chocolate sprinkles. Such a big part of any family celebration growing up.

December 1, 2010 at 1:32 pmLike others, I’d enjoy a good snickerdoodle recipe! Also, I remember eating some really yummy brownie/cookie bars. It was a brownie-esque bottom (much thinner and a little crisper than a brownie, though), a thin layer of mint cream, and a top layer of a fudge-like frosting (it firmed up and wasn’t gooey like regular frosting). If you have any idea what I’m talking about, I’d love to see it on the blog! 😉

December 1, 2010 at 1:35 pmImpressive. My answers (before reading the whole post) were: rosettes and gingersnaps (which are, I admit, different from gingerbread, but certainly related!). I make gingersnaps every year, but I haven’t made rosettes since I was a wee girl cooking with my mother.
I have a couple of rosette irons, but I am intimidated by the prospect of hot oil. I’d love to make some, and an instructive post which tells me that I will not set my house on fire would be super-helpful.

December 1, 2010 at 4:29 pmhow about a peppermint mocha type cookie? I love the coffee, but I figure if I’m gonna eat all that sugar, I want DESSERT.
My mom would make chocolate crinkle cookies from this old betty crocker cook book but somehow hers always tasted SO CHOCOLATEY and mine never taste quite chocolatey enough…
I also agree with the perfect chocolate chip cookie… too many cookies out there are SAD failures at chocolate chip cookie-dom. These don’t have enough chocolate, those are dry, these are TOO cake like, those are too thin and crispy…

December 1, 2010 at 11:26 pmIs it possible to do a peppermint chocolate cookie? Maybe with Andes mint chips?
Also- my family’s favorite Christmas recipe for gifts is Chocolate Bread. It goes against my natural inclination never to use a box mix, but the moist wonderfulness is completely worth it! Here’s the recipe:
Chocolate Bread
2 boxes German Choc. Cake Mix, or any choc. Flavor
2 sm boxes Instant choc. Pudding
8 eggs
1 16 oz. container sour cream
1 ½ cups water
1 ½ cups veg oil
2. oz. bag choc. Chips
Mix ingredients in order given, pour into greased pans.
Bake at 350 for 40 minutes, adjust for pan size
4 – 8.5 x 4.5 x 2 large loaves
Freezes well
The Oh Baby Bars look like magic, by the way.

“These are a classic German Christmas cookie; you’ll find them in most every household as soon as St. Nicholas’ Day (December 6) rolls around. These gluten-free cookies are kind of like a cross between a macaroon and a meringue, with a hint of nutty spiciness. We find them truly addictive. They’re designed to keep for a long time, they’ll get chewier as time passes.”
