Good afternoon! Sorry this post is a wee bit late but Wednesdays are my yoga days and, wow, did I ever need it. Before I left though I was able to crank out a new True/Slant article—this time on my personal experience with finding a healthy balance. Good stuff!
In preparation for a late lunch and rigorous practice, I snacked on a broken piece of an Uncle Kracker + babybel cheese—
I ate this snack around 11. I still was pretty full from my waffle but knew I would starving if I didn’t have anything. Yoga was from 12-1:30 and was awesomeeeeee. Jen, the instructor, blasted some awesome music (everything from funky rap to Amos Lee) and we just flowed. My legs are totally going to be hurting tomorrow from her “standing leg series” (warrior three to half moon to revolved half moon back to half moon to dancer to standing splits to regular splits WOWZA) but the long savasana at the end was worth all the sweat.
I got home around 1:45 and busted into a new lunch I found buried within the black hole of my pantry:
How interesting! I was totally intrigued by this a few months back and bought it, only to have it disappear behind countless bags of flour and sugar. I sort of struggled as to thinking what I could fill the sushi with but then remembered rotisserie chicken + hot sauce + avocado!
So basically you “steam” the rice in the microwave (or on the stove if you are super cool and don’t own a microwave like me) and then you take the little nori wraps and put some rice in them with your choice of fillings. Mine were a tad bit messy but did the trick! It was a nice break from my usual salad or sandwich and I love the taste of nori!
With soy sauce (and hot sauce!) for dipping —
And to top it all off, another extra juicy peach!
I thoroughly enjoyed myself, clearly.
In other interesting news, there may or may not be a super sweet giveaway on the Healthy Living Summit website! Click here to check it out and see for yourself! 😉
I love Yoga Wednesdays but it really does act as a full day activity. When I checked my Blackberry after class I saw I had 40 new emails (!!) and countless things to catch up on. Here I goooo!

July 29, 2009 at 3:35 pmlol why do you not have a microwave? just curious because I know you were selling yours in the garage sale.

July 29, 2009 at 3:59 pmShannon,
that was a huge backfire and Ryan is still sort of mad at me about it. Our kitchen is TINY so I told him it would be best to sell the microwave and then my parents move (they are moving soon) we can take THEIR microwave and install it above the oven into the wall. Well…weeks have gone by and we still don’t have the microwave and don’t even know now if it will fit there…so we are microwave-less.

July 29, 2009 at 3:36 pmNice lunch! I saw Annie Chun’s sushi wraps and was intrigued, but super intimidated! Doesn’t look too hard, though! I think I’ll pick up a package next time I see them 😉

July 29, 2009 at 3:50 pmI love the True/Slant topic – I find it so refreshing and inspiring to remember that bloggers who I see as really ideal models of health OF COURSE have struggled to find their own sense of balance, which reminds me that I can do it too.
I love the cute little sushi wraps!

July 29, 2009 at 3:52 pmWhat a fun lunch! Love me some sushi!

July 29, 2009 at 3:55 pmToo funny – because last night I also found my Annie’s Sushi wraps in the depths of my cabinet (also my first purchase/try) and made some yummy avo rolls! I would definitely get them again and try to make my next batch prettier and more interesting.

July 29, 2009 at 3:58 pmI’m so bad at rolling sushi! Yours really don’t look that bad — at least you can still pick them up without falling apart on you! 🙂
Jenna
July 29, 2009 at 3:58 pmI’ve been eyeing these…..yours looks great.

July 29, 2009 at 3:59 pmI love making sushi – just did it last week for the first time and it’s so much fun, and way cheaper than eating out at a sushi lounge!!

July 29, 2009 at 4:02 pmWow, that lunch looks amazing! I have to go look around for that kit. Or I can just make it from scratch too I guess 😉

July 29, 2009 at 4:14 pmlove the article! so good 🙂

July 29, 2009 at 4:19 pmInteresting, I wonder how they keep the sprouted rice from going bad in the pantry? I guess because it’s dried again? For example, Ezekiel stuff is always kept in the freezer. Who knows?

July 29, 2009 at 4:20 pmThat’s such a neat kit, I love sushi & nori 🙂

July 29, 2009 at 4:51 pmsavasana is definitely at least 75% of the reason i attend yoga 🙂 the sushi wraps loook delish!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down)
July 29, 2009 at 4:53 pmGotta love a good yoga session!!
And I hope you get the microwave soon! haha…but it does force a person to get more creative, and it looks like you had an absolutely fabulous lunch with no microwave necessary. YUM! 😀

July 29, 2009 at 4:56 pmHoly smokes! You are a busy lady 😉

July 29, 2009 at 5:02 pmYour lunch looks so cute! I love when lunch is in a bunch of pieces. 🙂

July 29, 2009 at 5:02 pmI’ve tried that sushi before but I didn’t know they sold a brown rice version! I love serving the sushi as appetizers at parties since it looks hard to make when really you can just microwave the rice and it’s super easy!
Angharad
July 29, 2009 at 5:05 pmI too am sans microwave…at first I thought I would hate it but I actually love not having one! For one we actually would not have space right now in our teeny kitchen! But even if we did I prefer the old school use of the stove top over microwaves of heat anyday…oats just taste so much better that way, that’s for sure!!
Susan
July 29, 2009 at 5:09 pmWhat a neat idea for packaged food! I know what you mean about long yoga sessions. My bike rides are always much longer than all my other activities, and I lose so much time when I’m out there for 2+ hours!
I lived without a microwave for 5 months once. Made my power bill higher from using the oven so much!
Daria (Summer of the CSAs)
July 29, 2009 at 5:21 pmI don’t have a microwave either. None of the cool kids do. 😉

July 29, 2009 at 5:25 pmHey jenna!
I just started doing yoga, and I feel great! I have been teaching it to myself though (no schools or classes around in the boonies where I live), so I am not sure how right I am doing it, but it really makes running less hard on my knees!
I always used to see those sushi things in the market when I was going to university .. I think its way cheaper to just buy nori and rice!
Have a great rest of your day girl!

July 29, 2009 at 5:53 pmThat standing series sounds great but I am a little worried about how you get from standing splits to regular splits. That sounds like an accident waiting to happen. scary.

July 29, 2009 at 8:57 pmMy husband bought me a really cool sushi making kit for Christmas. I went and bought the rice, nori sheets and sesame seeds to make them with. Everything has been sitting in my pantry until today, when I saw your sushi post. So, I tried making some for dinner. It didn’t come out half bad! Thanks for inspiring me to try it!!!

July 29, 2009 at 9:45 pmthat was a great true/slant article. i really enjoyed it, but i’m a little confused because in it you wrote that you gave up crackers?

July 30, 2009 at 12:05 amMake your own sushi rolls! How fun! I really liked to true/slant on finding balance. I had no idea that you had struggled with fad diets and numbers on the scale. What a great inspiration.
