Hi guys!

For some reason I’m just oozing with positivity today. I think mapping out my August on my google calendar put me in a really good mood! So much fun stuff! I saw a few comments inquiring about my Lexington trip! 😉 The news is that I have family there and….my parents are thinking about MOVING to Lexington this fall. So, at the end of the month I will be going up there with them, visiting family and helping them house-hunt. I ADORE Lexington and am so excited…I haven’t been back for a few years and I have desperately missed it. I’m going to try to have a reader meet-up while I’m there, so stay tuned! The sticky part of the situation is that I won’t have a car but hopefully it will work out–I love to meet y’all!

My 90 minute yoga flow class this morning was intense. It was all about the legs and we moved super super slow to really focus in on those muscles big time. When it was all over and we were laying in savasana, I put my palm on my quad and it was literally quivering. Two hours later and I am STILL jelly.

Since I knew I had errands to run before lunch, I snacked on this bar from the depths of my purse

Total and complete drool. I rarely eat Balance bars but this one was so incredibly tasty I might have to buy more. Also, it warded off my hunger for the next two hours…which was a good thing because its awful to be hungry at the grocery store…if you know what I mean. I already have a bit of a shopping problem, I don’t need my appetite to effect my debit card anymore than it already does!!
I honestly didn’t buy much at the store because I’m about to go to Costco. Yeah, its sort of a pain to go to two grocery stores in opposite directions but I only do this once every two weeks for the “major shop”. And, the deals on the produce at Costco are INSANE so its really silly for me to spend more to buy less at a regular grocery store. Plus, my mom and I split a lot of the stuff in bulk, which makes it even MORE affordable!
I did buy some Gatorade at Publix after what y’all said about hydrating and running in the heat. Confession: I LOVE GATORADE. As in, freakin’ adore the stuff. I would chug it every single day if I could…especially the blue kind. I never buy it because of that fact (it would be gone in a day), however, I’m going to start doing the 1/2 gatorade 1/2 water trick in my water bottle for my outside runs. I’m also going to drink some Gatorade the night BEFORE my run to see if that helps any. I have got to find a way to beat these headaches! I’m planning a 3 mile run outside tomorrow morning so I’m trying to hydrate all I can today to get ready for it. Your advice helped so much the other day…thank you!! 🙂
Lunch was incredibly quick—-a Morningstar farms black bean burger with cheddar cheese and hot sauce in a whole wheat pita with an applesauce on the side!

Special treat!!!

Yummy all natural soda! This one tasted like cream soda (my favorite childhood soda) with sort of a floral note. Its very sweet (obviously) so a little goes a long way!

Love the Ooba in the wine glass…classic! I love gatorade too, but never buy it for the same reason…I would chug that stuff all day long! I’m not sure what it is that makes is so delicious but man, it really is great. Your lunch looks delish….love how it looks all cheesy and yummy!

You could also try coconut water! It’s a great way to rehydrate too! I buy the young thai coconuts from the store and crack them open myself. DELICIOUS! And the meat has lots of healthy fats too that goes great in smoothies.

Glad yoga was so great…wish I could have made it. Have fun at Costco! It’s my favorite place =)

    Jenna,

Loving your blog here at work, we were referred to you from Kelly Olexa. Just wondering if you ever use any organic “supplements” (i.e., greens products, fiber supplements, etc.). Have you ever tried and Garden of Life or Flora products? They seem to be in line with your mission (which we love). We’re not looking to sell you or your readers anything, just genuinely curious as to how we can better relate to people whose interests are aligned with yours, which products they would be interested in, etc.

Thanks so much and keep spreading the good word!

I too am plagued with the occasional headache after a hard run.. and I have no idea why! I’ve tried everything.. drinking extra water before and after my run, drinking gatorade, vitamin water, coconut water.. eating right after my run.. nothing has really helped though. I think I might just be cursed to have post-workout headaches for the rest of my life 🙁 good luck with your headaches! I hope you find something that works!!!!

As a dietitian I recommend Gatorade for certain athletes, in particularly if you are doing more than an hour since your glycogen stores are depleted. But it can be helpful shorter periods of exercise in extreme heat. Hope that you find it helpful!

Yummy lunch…positive Mondays are the best…

You know they sell Gatorade in bulk at Costco and they also sell the Gatorade mix (in huge canisters) so you can mix it with more water than called for to cut down on the sugar… That’s what my brother (a Gatorade junkie) does all the time and he just gets the premade bottles for when he’s in a rush or will be out or something.

I also suffer from headaches/migraines when I exercise in the heat. I just read an article is SHAPE magazine that says there is a 9% increase in headache risk for every 8 degree increase in temperature. The study mentioned dehydration and low-blood pressure (due to atmospheric pressure change) as possible causes. I found it very interesting!

I have those burgers in my freezer right now. I also just planned my busy August! Also, I share your love for mint chocolate. So I guess we are pretty much the same person….
In reference to gatorade, Try powerade zero! It has sucralose but no high fructose corn syrup. It gives you some electrolytes without all the calories and sugar if you need it for a short spurt of exercise. I feel gatorade is good for like a 90 min cardio workout when you need calories/glucose replaced. Just a suggestion. I have given up running outside in the summer, 90 degrees from 9am until midnight here in Texas, no thanks!

Jenna, love the confessions! About the Gatorade… I just heard word from Branden Brazier last week that Vega is releasing a new energy drink that you can feel in 20 minutes after drinking. It’s going to be the uber-charged, uber-healthy gatorade! I have no clue when it’s coming out yet!

I havent had gatorade in SO LONG.
Your yoga class sounds like it was crazy intenese, but probably even more rewarding because of it!

Rather than Gatorade because it’s made with pure sugar, you should drink coconut water, nature’s sports drink. That’s what I do and it works so well and is full of the vitamins and electrolytes Gatorade has, but naturally rather than the supplemental vitamins and electrolytes Gatorade uses. Seriously try it!

P.S. I am not trying to bash Gatorade… I know, Gatorade chill is quite addicting, but once you try the coconut water (plain, not the flavored kinds), you will never go back!!

    Jenna,
This saturday I ran my first 5K (the Moss Park Forest Run in Orlando) and sunday I did a morning run workout and BOTH days after I was done, I had a KILLER headache that just would not quit!!! I never thought about it being the heat until I read your last few posts. After the sunday workout I drank 2 bottles of water plus a Vitamin Water and FINALLY started to feel a little better. Isn’t that crazy how the heat can have such a huge impact?

Try buying the powdered Gatorade and mixing it yourself with extra water. I have the same problem with running headaches 2-3 hours after an outdoor run. I spoke with my running coach and he said since I am not running for an extended period of time (under 1 1/2 hours) it is most likely from the heat. It is super hot out here in Houston and it takes time to adjust to the temps. Try and get out early in the am, around 6am. You will feel better and the quiet is great for clearing the mind.

    Good luck!

I get workout headaches too and will have to try the gatorade. I used to drink it when I was training for triathlons and I think it really does help – mixing with water is definitely the best way to go.

Jenna, if I could send you over some coconut water from the UK, I would. It’s super cheap here. Well, relatively cheap, anyway!! lol.

Love the burger. Do you measure cheese when you eat it? I could LIVE off of cheese, so I have to be careful about having it in the house.

Wow drool to your pita!! I’m jealous of your Costco trip – love that place! I wish my mom lived close enough that we could split all the produce. It’s hard when you buy it for yourself!

I personally like G2 because it’s kind of like watered down gatorade, and it doesn’t have that thick “syrupy” taste that I don’t like about gatorade.

    Jenna-
I am huge fan of your blog! I’m a long distance runner too, and like many people suffer from migraines after a run and sometimes during a run. I have found that hydrating myself before and after my run is important, but more importantly for me is making sure I wear sunglasses or a hat to block the sun, this helps to minimize my exercise-induced migraines

When I first started marathon training a year ago, my muscles would cramp up real bad whenever I did long runs. I realized I wasn’t hydrating properly and getting enough salt intake. Gatorade helps tremendously, especially during runs, and if you are losing a lot of water through sweat, you might want to look into salt tablets. I’ve never taken them before, but I’ve heard it helps a lot of runners.

I live in Lexington–its a great place to live. I also have a food/fitness blog (http://fatfeministfitnessblog.blogspot.com/) and I would be happy to help you arrange a read meet-up. I would recommend the Good Food Co-Op Cafe (http://goodfoods.coop/) or Alfalfas (http://www.alfalfarestaurant.com/) both places are very up your ally. Also, in terms of a free-lance job tip, you could teach blogging at (http://www.carnegieliteracy.org/index.htm). I know that they have a blogging class and quite frankly I think that you’d be great at it. There’s lots of great Yoga studios here, the gym options are kind of limited, but of course we have all the standard chain gyms. We also have several runs, I’m doing the Mid Summer’s Night Run on August 15th–its a evening 5K that’s very popular.

Anyway, I hope some of those tips help. Wish you all the best!
