Apple Cider Cupcakes with Nutmeg Frosting

cupcakes-9382

First of all, I want to say that I have heard your comments regarding your dissatisfaction with my blog lately and I want to apologize for that. I’ve been blogging now for seven years and I think with everything going on in my offline life right now, it’s fairly accurate to say that I’ve reached a place of blog burn out. I actually feel a lot better now that I admitted that online!

To those of you who feel like this site isn’t genuine anymore, I politely disagree (and I have in the past and currently buy Green Giant products in my offline life. I would never choose to work with a brand that I personally don’t believe in). But to those missing the old vibe of the site, I agree and know where you’re coming from when you say that. I, too, sometimes miss the old vibe but the old vibe was coming from a very different place in my life than where I am at right now.

I’ve thought long and hard about this — should I quit blogging? Should I take a break? I really resonated with the Young House Love goodbye post a few days ago and honor their transparency. However, at the end of the day, I still do love the blogging world and enjoy posting on here, however frequently or infrequently that may be.

So, that’s all I really have to say about that this morning. I do feel a food blog burn out happening and since Grayson was born, have been very uninspired in the kitchen. Maybe that means, in order to stay as genuine as possible, less food and more life. I apologize Eat, Live, Run is different today than it was five years ago but this blog is based on my life and a lot has changed in my life during that time. I’m a very different person now than I was back then and I think this blog reflects that. Obviously, I’m hoping I don’t lose you as a reader but if what I’m saying doesn’t jive with you, I understand. There’s tons of great blogs out there begging to be read.

Now can we please get to the cupcakes already?

I’m kicking myself for not buying more of this delicious cider when we visited Apple Hill a few weeks ago. I have never been much of an apple juice fan but there is just something special about this stuff! It’s so good and so pure. I wish I had a freezer full of it right now.

I had been wanting to try apple cider cupcakes and knew this was the perfect time! These really are the perfect spice cupcake and totally just taste like FALL to me. I adore spice cake of any kind. I actually prefer it over chocolate, if you can believe that!

The frosting is fluffy, sweet and tastes faintly of vanilla and nutmeg. The best. These would be so great for a child’s fall birthday or just to celebrate any time! It’s been far too long since I’ve made cupcakes. I think Grayson appreciated how great the house smelled when they were baking. 😉

Apple Cider Cupcakes with Nutmeg Frosting

makes one dozen

Print this Recipe!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2/3 cup sugar

2 eggs, room temperature

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

3/4 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp ground cloves

3/4 cup fresh, unpasteurized apple cider

for frosting ~

2 sticks ( 1 cup) salted butter, softened (you can use unsalted if that’s what you have – just add a tiny pinch of salt to the frosting while you beat)

4 cups powdered sugar

1/4 tsp fresh ground nutmeg

1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a cupcake pan with nonstick spray or use paper liners. Set aside.

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. Add the vanilla and mix again.

In another bowl, sift together the flour, spices, salt and baking powder. Add to the butter mixture then drizzle in the cider slowly with the mixer running on low. Mix until just combined.

Fill cupcake molds 3/4th of the way full with the batter. Bake for 20-23 minutes until golden. Let cool completely while you make the frosting.

To make the frosting, beat the softened butter with the powdered sugar, vanilla and nutmeg for about 10 minutes — until very fluffy. Pipe or spread the frosting on the cooled cupcakes. Sprinkle with cinnamon if you desire!

Time:

45 minutes

    Hey Jenna,

I’ve been reading your blog for a few years now — I started reading it in college, and have continued to enjoy your beautiful photos and inspirational words ever since. For what it’s worth, I love your family posts and seeing glimpses into your life with a new babe! Keep up the fabulous work!

I, too, LOVE the more family-oriented posts! I read/follow a lot of food blogs, and for some reason always find myself way more drawn to posts about their lives/families as opposed to the food. (Which, I admit, I very rarely make the recipes that are posted!) Keep doing what you’re doing – because this is YOUR place and we’re just stopping by. 🙂

I tend to agree……there’s tons of great food blogs out there (and I guess life ones) but I like the family/life/food spin on your blog. A newer reader, I guess I should go back and check out your earlier posts?

But I laughed out loud at Nicki’s comment because as much as I love to read food blogs, c’mon, I almost NEVER makes those recipes!! Too hard, or don’t have the ingredients or skill or whatever…..just like to peruse. But life, AHA moment, that affects us all!

Be kind to yourself! I’ve been a loyal fan of your blog for years. Just the other day I made your peach cobbler and carrot ginger soup. The first few months of motherhood are HARD. And you have handled it with such strength and grace. There are many of us who love you and your blog. Keep posting.

Hi there. I have been reading your blog for a long time. I always enjoy it. Forget the other comments. You are who you are and you are putting it out there. Be proud of that. If people don’t like it, they are free to find something else to occupy their time. Keep doing what you want to do.

You should NOT have to apologize for shifting priorities. Ever. Now that I’ve had my baby, I am trying to back down off what my career was, because it just doesn’t mean the same to me. And I’m already getting pushback even though I haven’t made any moves yet. You keep doing what you’re doing and you will do great!

I also want you to know that I love all of your posts, recipes and family!! Maybe I’m biased because I had a son of my own, just a week after you had your son, but still… Please keep up the varied and great posts. I always look forward to them.

Also, I completely understand where you are coming from–life changes so much with a new baby. I hope that this new perspective includes some baby food recipe eventually. 😉

Hi Jenna! I’m so sorry you have to defend yourself. It’s funny to me that anyone would be upset about these things. Life changes. Priorities and interests changes. That should be welcomed and accepted!! I’ve enjoyed the ways you’ve shared these changes. This is your blog and keep doing what’s true for you. Plus, you have such a great archive of recipes already that people can draw from (I do all the time!) And if you post a recipe then we know you really truly love it and are inspired by it even moreso than blogging for the sake of blogging (which I’m totally not accusing you of, but when the daily pressure is off there’s even room for more inspiration and creativity.) Loyal readers who support you and enjoy your writing will stay here and you’ll probably attract a new audience as you go in this new direction. I hope you’ll stick around!!!! In fact, you’ve encouraged me to become more personal on my blog and in my writing because I’ve enjoyed reading your life-based blogs so much and they’ve made a difference for me.

Jenna, I think I understand where you’re coming from. I had a baby girl a few days after your son was born, and your posts and even the changes in your content, posting frequency, etc. have all resonated with me. You are so kind to apologize for the changes around here, although I don’t think you need to. Anyway, all I’m really trying to say is that I think you’re doing great. Thank you for sharing so honestly about your life, especially in a forum where it is so easy to be misunderstood. Keep on keeping on, however that looks for you each day. 🙂

We love you.

    Hi Jenna!

Love your blog and the evolution it has taken – that is true to life since we all evolve! I love the mix of food and real life especially since I have an 11 month old at home 🙂 I think it’s great that you are sticking to your style and not bending to the negative comments. As a longtime YHL fan I was so disappointed that their ending seemed to stem from the haters and that they were always reassuring/polling/analyzing and not just owning their style. At the end of the day it is your blog and we as readers appreciate the authenticity. You rock!!

    Jenna –

I know that you are going to get thousands of comments – but for what it’s worth I only regularly read 2 blogs – yours and the Pioneer Woman! So much of what I cook comes from your blog – and will continue to do so (even if you only post a new recipe once a year). Thank you for giving me an arsenal of wonderful recipes to choose from.
I love that your blog has evolved over time with you and your life (to me – that’s the point of the blog) – for those that are voicing their concerns and complaints – I would ask them, is their job exactly the same as it was 7 years ago or even 5 years ago? Most likely not – so how can we expect you not to change and grow over time?
As I was reading this post and saw that you were contemplating not blogging anymore, I got very, very sad! But – also recognize that you must do what’s right for you and your family.
Good luck with everything Jenna and please know that there are many, many readers out there stand behind you!

    xo Erin

PS – I so appreciate your honesty too – you keep it real and that makes this blog and you feel like a long distance friend

    Jenna,
I started following your blog about a year and a half ago and, to me, it has been so much more than just a food blog. I have loved watching your life evolve, your family grow and your complete honesty throughout everything. Your family posts are something I look forward to reading. I happen to think you are balancing life, your adorable son, and this blog pretty darn well. There may be a few people out there with unkind things to say, but just know those few people don’t begin to compare to the number of people out there reading and supporting you! Keep doin’ your thing!

Oh and you create some pretty fantastic recipes as well! Apple Cider cupcakes?!? Umm….yes please! Yum! 🙂

    October 15, 2014 at 1:56 pm

Hey Jenna! I too have to say that I really enjoy the direction your blog is going. Maybe that’s because I am a soon-to-be new mom (in 5 weeks!) so you’re mom and baby related posts certainly are of interest to me. Actually, I’m finding now that I would like more of those and lifestyle-type posts on your blog than just recipe posts…and I LOVE food!
It’s unfortunate that you have to defend your blog and I don’t think you should have to apologize for it. I can only imagine how much things change once a baby enters your life and it seems life you’re adjusting just fine and going with the flow and it is nice to see that on your blog. You haven’t lost a reader here 🙂

    October 15, 2014 at 1:56 pm

For the record, I’ve been a long time reader and yes–I’ve noticed that you’ve slowed down and your content has slightly change–but I totally don’t mind it. I understand and expected the change! I would have been worried if there wasn’t some sort of shift!

You post great recipes and great insight about dealing with the phase of life you’re in. I’d be sad if you stopped blogging, but I’d totally understand if you posted less frequently and if the tone of your posts changed.

Do what feels right for you. If it’s not blogging anymore, then don’t blog anymore. But if you enjoy writing when you have time for it, you’ll still have an audience here.

Please don’t feel the need to apologize. While we all wish you’d post more, I think most understand why that isn’t happening. Anyway, keep doing what you’re doing and focusing on what is most important to you… that cute little guy, Grayson!

You are in such an amazing time in your life! You will look at at these baby days of Grayson and think of how sweet they were! The blog has been great! You just went through one of life’s greatest transitions (and one of the most life changing for sure)! The days will not be like this forever. This is just a stage. And while you are in this stage, you have been doing an incredible job at keeping up your blog! I’m impressed! Keep doing what you are doing! A blog on recipe, product reviews, Grayson, travels, no blog entry days. This is what is so great about your blog…. its real! Life changes, its fluid and your blog mirrors that. These aren’t your Cordon Bleu days, your a new momma right now. That is such a higher calling than anything before. It’s amazing that you let us in to. Share your journey!

    October 15, 2014 at 2:13 pm

Thanks so much for your honesty, Jenna! Honestly, I totally get where you’re coming from as a blogger. Since I’m a food editor by day, I’ve found that since getting married and becoming pregnant I’m not nearly as inspired to create recipes at home since I’ve spent so much time creating recipes at work. And when I’m home, I’m more excited about blogging about my life, marriage, faith and upcoming motherhood adventure. Sometimes I’m afraid that people will fall away from my site because they original came for a food blog, but at the end of the day I have to be true to myself and my passions, as do you.

I, for one, will continue to read. I’ve actually grown to love your blog the more you share about your life and your family. I figure I can get great recipes from a lot of places, but reading posts about life from someone I resonate with is much harder to find.

PS: As someone who works for General Mills, I totally support your use of Green Giant! 😉

    October 15, 2014 at 2:18 pm

    Hi Jenna,

I’m one of the ones who commented on the latest GG post. I wanted to say that I totally understand the changing vibe of the blog…it’s your blog, and in order for it to be authentic, it changes with your life and what you feel like writing about.

My comments were more directed at the fact that two recipe posts in a row were sponsored posts, and not the kind of quality recipes that made ELR so popular in the first place. Brands wouldn’t be sponsoring you if you didn’t have a devoted readership, and much of that readership is thanks to YOUR brand that you’ve built up over the years. So I just think it’s important to consider how those types of sponsored posts affect that brand you’ve worked so hard to build. I completely agree that Green Giant fits perfectly into your brand, and I think the sponsorship is a great fit – just maybe not two recipes posts in a row. Because in the long run, if you want to keep getting lucrative sponsorships, you do have to think about how they affect readers. It’s a catch-22 you have to ride carefully.

Just some food for thought. Thanks for sharing your life!

I do not understand why people have problems with these bloggers representing a brand. I have seen this on other blogs too. When I see recipes with made from certain sponsors it isn’t a big deal. Ok so now it is ok if she does a sponsor recipe just not two in a row?? Wow. So many rules.

          October 16, 2014 at 6:08 am

I’m not sure why a little amount of “constructive criticism” is being reacted to so harshly? This blog is a source of income for Jenna and I think I don’t see what is so bad about her customers providing some feedback, as any other business would.
It’s not an attack on Jenna – far from it. I’ve been reading her blog since the start and even purchased her book and read it cover-to-cover. And I’ll continue reading, as I enjoy hearing about her life and think she has some of the best recipes and photos in the blogosphere. But I don’t see why providing some food for thought has to be responded to with such backlash.

          • Jerrica
            October 16, 2014 at 5:11 pm

Maybe it is’t being taken well because not only does she have the stress of being a new mother and all that entails, she also now has to deal with negativity from a place that she pours her heart and soul into. Why can’t people cut her some slack during one of the most important times of her life? Why do people have to criticize at all? Right now she doesn’t need anyone’s advice or critique. Right now she needs her ‘friends’ to be supportive and a to be a place to find comfort. This is one of my favorite blogs and I hope that it does not spiral out of control like YHL did. Keep doing your thing, Jenna.

          • Lisa
            October 17, 2014 at 11:06 am

The reason why the constructive criticism as you are putting it being reacted to, although a far cry from harsh, is because people start reading blogs and they feel they have every right to start voicing how they think the blog should go. Here is the truth about blogs…whether you agree or not this is real talk here…blogs provide a service. We don’t look at it that way because we feel “connected” to the writer etc but it is a service. It is a source of entertainment. So we feel as readers that we are contributing to the blog by being a reader so we have the right to say something when it changes or no longer pleases us. The truth is we don’t. Jenna is providing a service “FOR FREE TO US” I might add and she is in turn making money just like we all do at our jobs. It is still business. We can’t possibly imagine that because we feel we are again, connected to this blog and person but that is the truth. So that is why when things change, we can always go read something else. Imagine if you had thousands of “bosses” to try and please….exhausting and you wouldn’t be able to please a one of them. That is how we feel we are as readers. We feel entitled to something but we are not. We are being provided entertainment and just like if we start watching a movie we don’t like? We shut it off.

You are not the same person you were when you started the blog, and to expect it to stay the same is impossible. As you said, it’s not the blog it was five years ago and that wasn’t the blog it was in the beginning but you still offer a positive outlook and delicious recipes. I find you an inspiration, not only in the kitchen but in life as well. Keep writing about what makes you happy and what inspires you and your true fans will stay by your side. I look forward to your posts, whether it’s a recipe i may or may not want to try or you sharing a personal glimpse of your life with us.

Hi Jenna! Long, long, LONG, time reader here who rarely comments 🙂 There are some blogs out there whose shift I haven’t enjoyed, but I still love your blog! Lifestyle posts, family posts and recipe posts! Keep doing what you do 🙂

  • Laurel
    October 15, 2014 at 2:59 pm

    Jenna, I’ve been a reader here for over six years and have watched your postings shift as your life has shifted. It’s completely natural. You write what you know — blogging is especially about that. I have a food blog that I started about the same time, but I only recently have been inspired to write on it again. And sporadically at that. I now have two children myself, and THEY are my priority, my life. {I actually guessed that you were pregant before you announced it because of how simple your recipes started to be and how postings were slowing down. Happened to me too. 😉 The LAST thing I wanted to do, in early pregnancy especially, was write or think anything about food!}
I’ve always considered your blog more of a lifestyle blog anyway, as you didn’t always post recipes earlier on. It has not been odd to me that you would post fewer recipes and more lifestyle (marriage and parenthood now) posts at this point in your life.
You continue doing what you do. 🙂 You have many loyal readers who enjoy whatever you want to share with us. Thanks for your hard work and dedication over the years!

Yum! Those look and sound incredible!! Pinned for later use 🙂 ….And, I’m sorry about the comments you’ve been getting. I never really understand people’s expectations. How do people expect the same thing after so many years, when your life has changed so much! I always find your posts genuine and I hope you continue to post as frequently as you feel is right for you. I’ll always be reading 🙂 And I often go back and make old recipes I’ve saved over the years too! Anyway, just my two cents, keep doing you and enjoying this fun, exciting time. This time in your life won’t last forever, soak it up! Plus, you have a pretty adorable excuse for being busy 🙂

You are doing a great job! I’m a new mom too and I certainly am not creating new meals right now. I love the lifestyle posts and the simple meals you’ve been posting. Forget the naysayers and do what you love, even if that means pausing and focusing on your family for awhile.

    Jenna,
I love your blog. I have been a faithful but quiet fan of yours for a few years already! I started visiting your blog because of your food ideas and fun way of writing. I keep coming back whether you are writing about food, family, favorite things, faith, books, or whatever just because I enjoy your personality and way of looking at life. I especially appreciated your honesty in sharing how having a baby changed your life – and not always in pretty ways. My own boys are 17 and 13 but I remember all too well feeling exactly how you were describing those early days. (it’s easier with the 2nd one – even if the 2nd one isn’t the “good – easy” baby!). So I would encourage you to keep doing what you are doing when it works for you and isn’t a burden for you. You brighten my day when I read your blog! 🙂

I don’t normally comment on the blogs I read but this post made me sad to see you apologize for the blog content. In my opinion, you should not apologize for your family and that adorable baby of yours taking priority in your life. Or for the evolution of the blog subject matter. I have been reading your blog for a few years and while the content may evolve as your life evolves, the authenticity and the tone have remained the same and something I enjoy. I hope you don’t feel discouraged and keep the good stuff coming. I always smile when I see a post from you in my feed!

Jenna, it breaks my heart that people have said those things to you, especially because I whole heartedly disagree. It is those people who are not genuine if they expect you to not be a real person and change with your life. Of course your blog has changed–you created a life! Duh! I am so totally happy for you and to see everything that has happened in your life. I am so grateful that you’re real and sharing what food you have time for in your real life because I am also a newlywed and will be starting a family at some point and will need fast, family friendly meals. I read all the time and rarely comment but I wanted you to know that there is at least one (but I’m guessing way more) person who likes YOU and wants to read about anything you create or enjoy because we are inspired by you, not what we think you should be or expect. Thank you for being real and I’m glad you’re not giving up! I can’t wait to see/read what happens next!

    October 15, 2014 at 3:31 pm

I love your blog precisely because it feels-and has felt- so genuine. I know there will always be people who have any opinion about anything, but I honestly can’t believe that people feel otherwise. (I also can’t believe that people would reach out to complain about it, but I’m trying not to judge.) Thank you for sharing yourself, your family, and your food so honestly.

ALSO those cupcakes look amazing. I went to the orchard a few weeks ago and bought NO extra cider to take home. None. What was I thinking?!

      October 15, 2014 at 3:35 pm

Also, there are so many reasons to specifically use frozen produce and make quick meals. I spend a lot of time browsing through food blogs but not trying the recipes because, frankly, they call for a LOT of ingredients that I can’t always afford to buy all at once, if at all. But I always have some sort of frozen broccoli in my freezer. It’s nice to see some recipes that are more accessible that way, too.

As a new reader, I enjoy the balance of family/life posts and recipes. As a newlywed I like to read about what life is like with kids from real people; it makes me feel like when we do decide to start a family that I will be able to do it.

I can’t believe people would be complaining, as if you’re here to make them happy and give them what they want! Please! Keep doing what you’re doing and if you need to take a break, then take it! We will be here when you get back 🙂

” I apologize Eat, Live, Run is different “– never, ever apologize for being genuine and being yourself! 🙂 Blog about what YOU want to write about– you’ll be happier, and ultimately more inspired, than if you try to force something. If people don’t like your new direction, they can decide to take their readership elsewhere. It saddens me to hear that people may have been leaving negative comments. That’s the last thing anyone wants, let alone a new mom! Keep up the good work!

Can’t wait to try those cupcakes!!

    Hi Jenna!

Your blog is one of the blogs that falls into my “read the post no matter what the recipe is” category. We’re in different seasons of life but still – I enjoy your voice, your interests and trust your reviews & opinions to where I have checked out some of the food & products you’ve posted about for myself. I think that as long as it’s “authentically you” this blog can take no wrong turn and those of us who like your perspective on life will always continue to read. At risk of sounding sappy, I hope you are sincerely proud of the space you’ve created here. I think it’s one of the more unique blogs out there because it’s really taken quite a journey/gone through many phases & changes just as you have the past 7 years, and that’s a pretty awesome thing to have.

I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and I have always loved it- I’m just one of those people who don’t comment much. Don’t let anyone discourage you from doing what you’re doing. I always end up coming back to your blog when I need a new recipe. Never disappoints. 🙂

    Jenna,

Blogs should never remain original to the first concept because they are supposed to reflect on the changes of the writer’s journey in life. Don’t get discouraged by those who are unappreciative of your posts there are so many of us who absolutely love reading your blog and “being a part” of this next phase in your life. It helps me especially since I am about to be a first time mom as well. We all grow up and life changes and your blog reflects that. So thank you for continuing to post and being true to who you are.

    Jenna,

Long time reader here! I genuinely love reading your blog (I also read your book) and actually prefer your “life” posts to the recipes. When I started reading blogs, I only read for recipes and now I prefer the more lifestyle theme. While I am closer to marriage than babies, I actually really love reading baby posts as well! It’s like insight into an unknown (but hopefully) future world. I guess my point is that as your life changes, your readers’ lives change as well and I don’t think you should feel as though you need to apologize for changing interests. I do hope you continue blogging, even if it is fewer posts a week! Ultimately, I know you have to do what is best for you and your family, but I do hope you keep a presence here! Losing a longtime blog is like losing a friend!

Yum and double yum! I will make this soon.

And the blog should be what you want it to be. I will enjoy it however it turns out. I love the life posts and recipes too and travel. You are a wonderful writer and would be sad if you to quit. Life changes and so should your blog. I enjoy it very much!!

ELR was my favorite blog 5 years ago when I was fresh out of college, cooking and living my way through a first attempt at the “real world”… To be honest the reason I’ve stopped reading on a regular basis is because it’s become more of a mommy blog. Which is totally fine and beautiful – I’m just not a mother so I don’t identify with the blog as much anymore. I am sure I’ll understand it better one day when I have a baby, but for now, I’ll just check in every now and then and hope there’s a good, clean, delicious recipe 🙂

I’ve been a long time follower of your blog & just want you to know that I enjoy reading it just as much as I did the first time I stumbled upon it. I’ve made several dishes from your blog and they are always some of my favorites. As a busy vet student with little time to spend in the kitchen, I really appreciate recipes like your last post. I already have it planned in for next week! I know some people have given you grief for it, but I wouldn’t mind more posts like that! We also have weekly “Fun Food Fridays” and these cupcakes will definitely be making an appearance! Keep doing what makes you happy and don’t let the negativity of others bring you down!

Sometimes life is all about the “eat, live, run”. Sometimes life changes, and it becomes about “eat, live, and slow down and pay attention”. I don’t miss the baby days, but I do I wish I could have read about your perspective 10 years ago when my kids were Grayson’s age. I will be patient and look forward to the recipes when you have the time and inspiration! For whatever its worth, I think you are doing great.

  • Aggie
    October 15, 2014 at 5:35 pm

You obviously have a lot of love and support here 🙂 So what I wanted to tell you is that I can relate to how you are feeling this past year. I had my 3rd baby, my kids were older and I moved. I did not have it in me to cook, or be social online. I had nothing to say. I was scared it was time to shut down and move on (broke my heart). But I just sat back and took some time to let things process…and a few good friends really encouraged me and made me realize I was being hard on myself, trying to be who I was before baby came…we all grow, change, have babies, move and life just ebbs and tides with the season we are in. Micah just turned a year last week and I finally feel like I’m coming up for air. I feel more like my old self, just a little more frazzled, I want to cook again (though I really don’t have a lot of time) so my recipes have been reflecting that. So for what its worth…I know readers opinions are important to us, I think some can be a little selfish at times. Do your thing…this is your space, and the readers that are still here will appreciate your genuine voice. When you blog for this many years you can’t really expect all things to stay the same.
Hope you and your sweet family is doing well. xoxo

I have ready your blog for years and still love it. Maybe it’s because I am thirty weeks pregnant and so I enjoy reading your baby related posts but I think you are very good at keeping it ‘real’ on here, as much as one can online I imagine! I hope to read more posts about motherhood and will be looking forward to them as much if not more than the cupcake recipes 🙂

I guess it’s been said enough already, but I just want to add to the chorus that it’s perfectly acceptable and understandable that a blog may change with a lifestyle change. You’re doing great and keep doing what works for you and your family! And these cupcakes look beyond amazing. 🙂

Jenna- You don’t owe anybody anything! People CHOOSE to read this blog and for good reason… it’s lovely, as are you! And for other people reading this comment, I personally know Jenna so I can say she’s lovely. : ) You definitely don’t need or deserve any negativity about your blog or your life. If people don’t like what you have to say, or don’t have to say because you’re busy with your most important job ever, they can go elsewhere. Keep on keepin’ on. That is all. Oh, and I adore your little munchkin!

    Hi Jenna,

I’ve been reading your blog for six years, but this is actually my first time commenting. I started reading it when I was first learning to cook, and relied on step by step break downs and photos to know what I should be doing. I have improved a lot in that time! I also love the occasional post about your life, and love seeing how your life is evolving in the new stage as a mom. More importantly, your recipe page is one of the first place I go when I just want to browse for a new recipe. You have a great collection with huge variety. Several of your recipes are in my regular rotation. Even if you aren’t creating new recipes like you used to, it’s a great resource! You should always be you, whoever that is in the moment.

I totally adore the evolution of the blog. I’ve been reading for a few years now and really enjoy reading lifestyle posts AND recipe posts. It’s true, every post falls under the “read it no matter what” category. Keep being as genuine as you were day one, and no apologies!

(Basically, repeating what everyone else has already said. ;))
    1. Don’t apologize for being YOU. If someone doesn’t like it, they have the choice to not follow along.
    2. I love your honesty and transparency.
    3. I think it’s commendable that you’re more concerned with living real life “offline” than not.
    4. No matter the content, I will continue reading and enjoying your blog, as long as you decide to keep it up.

Jenna, when I began reading your blog you were in a completely different place in life. You were with someone else, you experienced a huge loss in your family. It has been a pleasure and an honour to be a part of your journey. I’m proud of how far you’ve come and wish you nothing but the best. I always enjoy your posts and there is nothing wrong with growing up and evolving. You’re doing a great job Mama!

    October 15, 2014 at 6:54 pm

Please don’t feel like you have to apologize or explain yourself to us. Having a baby is a huge, life changing event. Of course, your priorities have changed and you feel different. Grayson is (and should) be your focus. As he gets older, you may start to feel reinvigorated in the kitchen. You post as little or as much as you want and about whatever you want. The name of the blog is Eat, Live, Run not Eat, Eat, Eat- you should be able to post about life and food. Also, if the blog didn’t change and evolve as your life changes and evolves then it wouldn’t be staying true to who you are.

  • Christina
    October 15, 2014 at 6:55 pm

i don’t realize what a beating blog writers take until I read posts like this one. I’ve seen similar posts on some of my other favorite blogs. It makes me sad that you would receive critical and/or negative feedback as your blog shifts with the changes in your life. For what it is worth, I have made several of your recipes and always loved them. I have also loved your family posts, from when you were single…to newly married…to a new parent. Thanks for sharing your food and your life with us! (Also thanks for reminding me that I need to do a better job leaving positive comments on the blogs I read, because the writers are probably getting their share of negative comments.

It always makes me lol when people voice opinions about what bloggers “should” be doing/writing about. Like….. it kind of defeats the point of reading blogs if you get to say what should be written, and how often, and what type?

I was shocked when I read the first part of your blog — that people would feel they have the right to get upset or frustrated over your change in blog frequency and content is amazing to me. Family is sooo much more important, you will never get these days back. Never feel you need to apologize. When I see a new post from you, I think “Oh great, a new post to read!” I’ve never thought “It’s about time she posted!” I’m happy to see that many of the comments above reflect the same point of view.

Hate hearing some readers have been giving you a hard time! Part of the reason I love keeping up with so many blogs is watching how women grow and change. Few people work at the same job for 7 years, so I don’t see how we can expect you to stay exactly the same in your field either. Anyway, I always look forward to your lifestyle posts! I’m more “search when I need it” sort of recipe girl anyway. I’d much rather see what my favorite bloggers are up to and I always love a good baby update! 🙂 Happy 5 months to Grayson! Jeanna, I would be suspicious if your life and priorities didn’t change with your marriage to Adam and baby Grayson. You would be doing your readers a disservice if you continued to blog as if nothing was different in your life. I appreciate your recipes that other readers seem to object to because I think we can all use time-saving tips when life gets complicated. There is always time for special recipes – if you have the time. New mothers do not.

Girl, yours is my favorite blog. Don’t know why folks wanna be negative. You seem like such a cool person, and I love seeing pics of your little family. (Your boy gives some of the most outrageous faces on Instagram!) Praying God’s favor on your family. 🙂

Oh, and I wanna add something. Hope it makes you feel like you’ve got support in the outside world.

About two years ago I stumbled across your book, read it, then wanted to read your blog. So I started with your first ever blog post, even though you were a year or two into your blog. It took me about 6 months to catch up, but about this time two years ago, I started reading your blog in real time. So today, I’ve read every single post.

All that to say, whether you keep blogging forever or stop tomorrow, you’ve added joy and entertainment to my life for the past two years. My favorite moments: 1) reading about you meeting Adam when you were still with what’s-his-name… and I could tell you saw something special in him… keep in mind that in real time you were already dating him!; 2) reading about your daily life at culinary school; 3) reading about you living life as a mom.

I love your blog AND I love that it’s changed with you. My mom started a blog, was really into it for a while, then she wasn’t motivated to post anymore. That’s who she is and you are who you are. Thank you for keeping it real. If a reader wants to look at food you’ve made, you have plenty of old recipes that deserve to be cycled back through. I love the mom posts & I am thankful for you.

I’m sorry that people have been verbalizing their dissatisfaction with you and your blogging voice. It hurts my heart because I know that food blogging takes passion and sometimes there just is not room for blogging with everything seems to need to take priority. Love the cupcakes! You do you. 🙂

Oooh Jenna! I’m sorry you feel the need to defend yourself. The fact is this is YOUR blog, and it can be whatever you need/want/feel. I wouldn’t expect it to be the same after having a baby! I’ve been a reader for many years, and am happy to follow you through your next phase of life. Keep on keepin’ on — we’ll still be here! xo

I’ve been a reader of your blog for years, and I love the direction you’ve taken! I love the family and baby posts as much as your delicious recipes. I am a mom of 5 (my youngest daughter Stevie is just a few weeks older than Grayson), and I have no intention of cloth diapering, yet I read every word of your posts with fascination 🙂 Keep being you-you’re great!!

NOOOO Please don’t leave! I already can’t handle losing YoungHouseLove. I absolutely love your blog the way it is and evolving is natural! I love the posts about Grayson and the recipe posts. Being a new mother as well, I absolutely love the mommy posts. Please don’t go away!

I love hearing about your life. And love the green giant posts! I just bought some green giant stuff bc I’m a new mom too and struggle to get dinner on the table! Thanks for being honest! That’s why I read! Keep up the good work mama!

Jenna your blog is my absolute FAVOURITE!
Although I’m nowhere near the stage where you are in life at the minute (I’m at university in the UK) – it is still so nice to watch the bloggers I follow grow and evolve over the years, get married and have children. The Grayson posts are my favourite and I can’t wait to follow you through your next phase of life! Keep on posting x

So glad to see the great comments from all your readers, Jenna! I love, love food and cooking, but had to make a personal decision to dial back on the amount of time these passions were taking versus spending it as a mom and wife. I let go and use more prepared food for speed and also let others cook more. It is not my first choice but I know that I’ll have more time in the future to spend cooking. So, it is great to learn more about healthy prepped food from you, like the GG recipe from a few days ago. We are in good company together!

    Hi Jenna,
I’m a fairly new follower to your blog from overseas, but love it. I couldn’t read this and not counter the negativity that people feel they have a right to voice in these ‘anonymous’ comment sections. The fact that people think they can complain about what a blogger chooses to post and how often is absolutely baffling. They’re not paying you to do a job for them, it’s one of the internets little blessings that we can learn from and follow people like yourself.
So keep doing what you do, and I guess take pride in the fact that they obviously like your unique recipes enough to complain about any absence. There’s plenty of ‘food only’ blogs around if they want. I for one am equally happy to also find out what I have in store for hopefully impending motherhood!
    Best wishes to you.

    Hi Jenna,
I’ve been meaning to post a comment for a few weeks now and haven’t got around to it. This seems like the perfect time to do so! I’m 16 weeks pregnant and have been reading your blog on and off for 5 years. I am a qualified chef myself and have been OFF food completely since I got pregnant. I’ve even gone as far as buying freezer meals once or twice. Anyhow, your pregnancy posts have been the most helpful to me, I LOVE your trimester favourites posts and recaps, I’ve even bought so many of those products (love the Heritage Rose water btw), and I also really look forward to following all the helpful baby tips once my baby comes. Please keep posting about your life as a mom since there are quite a few of us new mommies out there that look forward to your tried and tested suggestions! xx

Keep blogging ! I love the recipes that you do post and it’s new and exciting watching Grayson grow and reading about his achievements . It’s not always about the food ….it’s about the ups and downs of life . That’s what makes ELR interesting . Keep at it Jenna ! Your loyal readers love you !!

Jenna – I don’t understand why someone would feel the need to criticize you! Of course, you’re in a very different place in your life, and I think it’s commendable that you want to continue blogging (which makes me happy).
I’ve been through many seasons in my life – from newlywed to motherhood to career-life and now retirement and each one brings different interests and activities. I admire your consistency with blogging and don’t know if I could have kept it up. I’m glad you have, and I hope to enjoy seeing more in the future – when it fits into your life.
    Thank you!

Hi Jenna I just want to give you some words of support..I too am a working mother and my kids are 5 and 2. It is not any easier to leave them now to go to work then it was when they were babies. Once you are a mother your passion for work changes – you can still love what you do but it has a whole new feeling. Keep doing what you feel is best for you and your family now. You can still make a living doing a blog but maybe it changes and you lose some people who are not in line with it, but you will GAIN new people who want to hear your words about life and cooking. On a separate note, I found your blog for recipes but because of you I was introduced to She Reads Truth( as part of a non cooking post by you) and it changed my life! I recently lost our third pregnancy at 16 weeks and it was awful but She Reads Truth spoke right to me heart and is helping me heal. So,keep up the great work no matter what you choose to write about! You are doing what is the MOST important thing right now:)

    Jenna,
I am sorry you have faced negativity. I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion, so I want to share mine.

ELR was the very first, and for a long time, only blog I read. I met your cousin when she spoke to my Marketing club at UF and I basically wanted her job haha. She recommended your blog, and I immediately fell in love with it!
While your blog has certainly changed from those days, it is your writing, your recipes, and your voice, that keep me coming back.
I am grateful you plan to continue blogging, and as long as you do, I’ll keep reading!
    Thank you!

People don’t like change. And they love adding an opinion when not offered. Bless their hearts ????
And clearly the Lord has you where HE wants you! You’re only obeying…don’t listen to those silly voices.
P.s. If you stop blogging, leave your recipes-they are a great go-to!

    Hi Jenna,
Not sure if you have the time to read all of these comments, and mine only echo what others have said…I just hope you feel the tremendous support from your readers to keep blogging as you deem you should. Your blog is one of the first I ever “followed.” I love checking in and not only trying new recipes (I do actually make them!) but also sharing in your new family adventures. Your honest comments about motherhood would have been very comforting to me when I was a new mother 20 years ago!! You have built a very successful blog, but only you know what your priorities need to be. Cheers.

everyone changes. i am not the same person i was 5 years ago when i started reading this blog. frankly, it would be less genuine if this blog didn’t evolve as you evolved!

Whoa. I had no idea people were complaining about your site. You can’t be 25 forever and stay the same, ya know? I personally love your site. Unfortunately there always seem to be the negative Nancys floating around out there. I started reading your blog fairly recently and was drawn to it because of the family posts and recipes. I have had a lot of friends have babies lately and while I’m childless it has helped me better relate to my friends by getting the honest truth from you and other bloggers. Keep up the good work!

I have to say, I’ve been reading your blog religiously for at least the past 6 years. I loved it then and continue to love it now! I somehow ended up reading some of your really old posts the other day (procrastination at its finest) and while I enjoyed your recipes and lifestyle then, I find I relate to you so much more now. Life is about more than food and exercise. The recipes are great, but feeling like you actually connect with someone on a personal level, even if you don’t know them, is the reason most of us read blogs. Keep doing what you’re doing, please!

Jenna, Jenna, Jenna. I sooo understand how you feel. I used to cook up a storm before I had my 2 yo. I’d do Thomas Keller dinners and fancy food of all kinds. Even worse I used to teach people how to cook and menu plan—now everyday, I’m like what the heck am I going to cook? I’m completely lost. I’m glad your blog has changed, it suits my needs. I hope you continue to write and share what you can with us. Much love to you and yours. xo

Hi Jenna, just wanted to say that I too have been a huge fan of your blog for the past couple of years and greatly agree with all of the preceeding commentors that this is your blog, life is about constant change, and you do such a wonderful job of reflecting that so well. Hi Jenna,
Wow look at all the comments and support you have.
My baby is only two weeks older than yours so I’ve enjoyed all the lifestyle posts. Though, yes i do miss the daily recipes, but it just goes to show your popularity. I remember your early blogs too, and its neat to see you mature right in front of us. I am one of those who wasn’t too thrilled with your green giant recipes, as I also turn to your blog for fresh and healthy recipes, more so now than ever! Keep updating us and keep up the good work.

Blogs are living, breathing beings and are meant to mature and change over time JUST LIKE LIFE. Do not let a few bad comments here or there deter you and what you share!!! Hi Jenna! I know it’s easy for me to say this, but ignore the haters! Life ebbs and flows and your blog reflects that. We as the anonymous/faceless internet are privy to so many intimate moments in your life, and I wanted to thank you for sharing these details with us – especially when it opens you up to criticism. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a microscope on my shopping cart! Personally, I love your blog, and appreciate the diverse content you post; even if it involves the green giant! I don’t understand why people give bloggers such a hard time about sponsorship – who has time to get frustrated about that? Anyway, I’ve been following your blog for years and as someone who is thinking about baby #1 (ahhhhh!!!) in the next few years, I appreciate your honest dialogue about the joys and challenges of motherhood – plus delicious recipes! For example, I feel compelled to go find apple cider to make these cupcakes! 🙂

I am a long time reader but often comment, but just wanted to leave a quick note.

If anything I feel like your posts this past year have been more genuine and I get excited each time you post (especially life posts!). I have loved hearing about the good and the hard when it comes to marriage, pregnancy, baby, and trying to adjust to life, even if it’s in a different way. 🙂

I’ve been reading your blog for many years. As a momma to a 2 year old with another on the way any day, not only do I love hearing about your life but also understand how priorities change. They should. It’s called growth 😉

I have a food/cooking blog and a Meal Planning business that has gone through all sorts of changes over the last few years. I am happy to say that as my daughter has grown into a toddler I find myself with passion once again in the kitchen. Perhaps as your son starts eating more solid foods you will begin to feel a connection to the kitchen again like I did.

If not, that’s cool too. I will continue to read and enjoy whatever you feel like sharing.

    Hey Jenna,

I have been a reader of yours for the last six years. Not only is your blog well written, the photography is amazing and I truly love the variation. I reference your blog for recipes to try and books to read all the time. I love seeing what’s happening in your life. Your honesty and beauty in the sweet and challenging moments you is unlike most blogs out there. You are inspiring in all aspects of this blog and I would be devastated if you decided to stop writing. I also would have no idea what to cook for Thanksgiving, so there’s that… You do you – we are all always changing and that’s beautiful.

I am a fairly new reader but have plans to go back through your blog and start at the beginning. I agree with what another commenter said in that no one is the same person that they were 5 years ago, life changes and our priorities shift. I’m loving the direction of the blog and really hope you don’t quit. I’m a working mom and totally appreciate the Green Giant post as it is a quick and easy weeknight dinner to throw together. I have a 1 year old and a workaholic (Tax CPA) husband, so quick meals are my friend. I love spending time in the kitchen, but real life gets in the way and kids grow up way too fast! Enjoy your little guy and keep posting about your life as a wife and mom. You are doing an amazing job! Can’t wait to see where this blog will be in another year when Grayson is eating table food – bring on the toddler friendly meals!

Thank you for sharing it with honesty, laughter and beautiful photos! Although I am not a mom myself, I love the family posts, the food, the book posts (though I imagine you dont have much time for that). I feel like a friend sitting down to have coffee with you when I read your blog and I am grateful for that.

I don’t think I’ve ever commented before, but I’ve been reading your blog since you went to culinary school. I love seeing how you’ve grown and changed. I love that your blog evolves to reflect your life. I love the sporadic updates, and seeing how you’re adjusting as a new wife and mom. Grayson is beyond precious. Your recipes are spot on – I’ve made SEVERAL of them, and never have I once been disappointed. You’ve got a loyal reader in this girl!

Please don’t stop blogging! I love your more family-oriented blog posts – and love the new direction of the blog. Truly, I find your blog more interesting and relate-able now! Quite frankly, those that find it (insert negative adjective here) – probably aren’t parents. Whether you are a working mama or a stay at home mama…life gets significantly busier when you are a parent and your priorities SHOULD and do change! Food is more about fuel than it is “art” – and I think that’s completely normal!

I know there’s already a bunch of comments, but I feel the need to come out of the woodwork like everyone else and tell you how much I love your blog. I loved it in 2009, loved it in 2011, and love it in 2014. My life has changed so much in that time and it’s reassuring to know that others my age (aka you) are moving through different seasons of life, too (and I don’t even have a baby!). Knowing that people are telling you your vibe has changed, I have to wonder: have these people not experienced similar changes and growth in life? That’s the problem with comment sections (and the internet in general)–it gives people the anonymity and platform to voice their opinion like their opinion actually matters to anyone but themselves. I liken those people to people I knew in high school who annoyed everyone. Now they’ve just grown up and are commenting on people’s blogs or creating hate forums. Some things never change, ya know? Aside from that tangent, I just want you to know that there are plenty of us out here that don’t comment with any kind of frequency, yet are loyal and very grateful that you let us peak in at your life. The recipes are the cherry on top. When I saw YHL’s post, I wondered if it was going to start a wave of either more popular bloggers quitting or readers feeling some illogical need to express dissatisfaction to bloggers (I never picked up on YHL’s supposed change in content, but my life doesn’t revolve around a DIY blog like it apparently did for a majority of readers). I hope this isn’t the start of it, but could never blame you if you called it quits. But oh, how I would miss you. Ok, this is long enough. THIS is why I don’t comment more. Kidding. Jenna, you and ELR are fabulous.

I’ve been reading your blog for several years now. If your blog stayed exactly the same, it would be so boring. Life happens and with those changes, you change too.

I enjoy your blog very much. Keep up the great work in taking care of your little one and keeping up with this blog! You’re doing awesome!

    October 16, 2014 at 8:29 am

Your site is called “Eat, Live, Run.” Right now a huge part of your life is your newly expanded family! Naturally it will cause changes in your posts. I love your recipes, but I also love your family posts. My husband and I just found out we’re expecting our first child, and I’ve greatly appreciated your candor about the struggles (and successes!) y’all have had. Do what you need to do, and post what you want to post, girl!

  • Sara
    October 16, 2014 at 8:29 am

I will never understand why people feel like they are entitled to complain about someone’s blog content. If you don’t like it, then don’t read it.

I don’t know. I was really bummed by the YHL goodbye posts, because I was one of the people who didn’t think anything was ‘off’ – I just enjoyed reading their posts and getting glimpses into a life so different from mine. If they posted about something I wasn’t interested in reading, then I marked it as read & moved on. Same for your blog.

I read a variety of different types of blogs based on the people that are writing them. They’re all very different from me, but they bring something to the table that I enjoy, and I’m thankful for that. I’m sorry you have been dealing w/negativity – as all the comments above hopefully demonstrate, a large percentage of your readers truly enjoy your work, and are always looking forward to seeing what you have to say. 🙂

I absolutely love your blog still. Maybe it’s because I’m going to have my first baby boy in about 3 weeks, but I love how you incorporate your life into the blog. Your blog is Eat, LIVE, Run, and life changes constantly. I love your freezer meal post, your cloth diaper post, your post partum post, your shrimp and goat cheese quesadilla post (life saver recipe), all of it. If people don’t like what they’re reading anymore, then oh well. You won’t miss them. I imagine you’ll get many more new readers, as in new mamas, expecting mamas, busy working mamas, etc. Keep it up, unless you’re burned out on blogging totally, then take a break and enjoy baby!

Hi there – longtime reader but rare (if ever) commenter – sorry about that! I just want to chime in and say thank you for sharing your changing life experiences with us, and giving us great recipes along the way. I had a baby last year and barely got to brush my teeth those first few months, so the fact that you’ve been blogging at all is an accomplishment. Keep doing what you’re doing. Cuddle your sweet little boy and enjoy these crazy early months of motherhood (it gets better and better with every stage) – we’ll be here ready to read whenever you feel inspired to share. When he starts solids, I especially hope to hear your ideas on feeding little ones!

P.S. This article really resonated with me a lot. I’ve already promised to allow myself to go easy and rest next time around! And be totally ok with that (that will probably be the harder part!): http://www.thedailybeast.com/witw/articles/2013/08/15/america-s-postpartum-practices.html

I’ve read your blog for a long time and have enjoyed the shift from more food to more life. You truly love your life and it’s wonderful to get a glimpse of that happiness in a world that is often so ugly. Also, I live in the East Bay (and am a fairly recent California transplant) and love seeing what places you go and things your family does — it gives me lots of ideas of places to explore or restaurants to try! In fact, I’m headed to Apple Hill this weekend thanks to your recent post.

    Jenna,
I’ve been reading your blog for many years. Although I don’t have a husband or a baby yet, I’ve always loved reading about your life and your recipes. The beauty in life is that it is always changing, but your writing style and personality will always be true and honest to who you are and that is why I keep coming back! You are a great writer, a strong woman and an inspiration to me. I hope one day I can pursue my passions as you have. I know it is easy to let other people’s words and opinions get stuck in your head, but you should continue to be true to you!

I, too, have been reading your blog for years and enjoy the way it’s changed recently. It probably helps that having my first baby coincided with yours! I have really appreciated having your extremely honest posts throughout pregnancy and the challenging early months of motherhood, and I’ve also found your product recommendations really useful. Sometimes it’s hard to know as a new mom what the right thing to do is; I’ve been inspired by your choices–like traveling a lot!–to push the boundaries a bit and try new things. Cooking and baking aren’t high on my list of priorities at the moment either! It seems absurd that you should have to apologize for changing the tone or frequency of posts of your blog. It’s your blog!

You just had a baby – your priorities are rightly elsewhere. 😀 And if you do get a little extra time, I would suggest showering, napping, or any other of a myriad of things than worrying about a few “haters”. Your blog is still great. 🙂

Oh, Jenna. Your blog is great. I’ve been reading for years and sure, it’s changed, but we can’t expect people to stay the same forever. You’re still a great writer. I’m sorry to hear that people have been criticizing you on your subject matter – which is basically just criticizing your life! How silly. Keep up the good work.

    October 16, 2014 at 10:29 am

I am probably late to this bandwagon (whats new) but wanted to say that I really like the shift. I have been reading since you were culinary school- (a long time i feel in blog reading days) and as things changed when you left Florida, things change continue to change. I like your recipes but I always, always wanted more life posts because I enjoy them more (because i am a snoop) and now that I am expecting my first child in December… i really really have enjoyed them and understand the change of pace.

Keep doing what you like to do, keeping it real and turning me on to fun brands and products i wouldnt otherwise hear about. I will keep reading.

    Best,
    Ashley

Keep being you, Jenna! I’ve been a follower from the early culinary school days and I personally love how “real life” your blog is. Keep it going, momma. I’ll always be a reader of yours. xoxo

I normally don’t comment on the many blogs I read, but I felt inspired to respond to this particular post.

I first began reading your blog for the recipes and the very genuine spirit behind the writing. When it began to shift towards your pregnancy, admittedly I was a little turned off initially. But I kept reading. And now I can honestly say that I’m very happy I didn’t quit. I’m a young woman who isn’t ready for marriage and children and what all of that comes with, but I do like learning from those who are and have gone through that transition. I’ve learned a lot about those elements of life from your blog, and that information will be far more valuable to me than recipes in the long run. You are honest about the struggles, joys, pain (physical and emotional) and rewards that have come your way since becoming a wife and now a mother. You can’t please everyone, but there is always someone who needs to hear your voice. If you feel God is continuing to give you wisdom to share with the cyber world, He will provide the audience for you. If you feel He is guiding you to focus more on your “life” rather than blogging, then pray, prepare and proceed without being bothered by others. God knows your heart and will make your way. “Your gift will make room for you and put you in the presence of great men.” Proverbs 18:16.

Thank you for your honesty and for being willing to share your personal life with strangers. I have learned a lot and continue to read it every day. Give your husband and baby boy some love today. 🙂

I completely agree with this. At this point in my life, I’m not fully in sync with what it takes to be a mom, but I still enjoy your posts. I resonate a bit more with some of your older posts now – and I can bet that when I reach the point of being a mom, I will learn from and really enjoy these posts, too! I think it’s completely appropriate/awesome that your blog has changed. Honestly, if it didn’t that might even be concerning. At the end of the day, haters are gonna hate, but it doesn’t change the fact that this is a great blog, with a huge base of readers who love the food & life tidbits that you share here!

Also, those cupcakes look SO delicious.

Hi Jenna – these look delicious! Just wanted to leave a quick comment and let you know I love your blog and actually have been enjoying it more since Grayson was born, even though you post less frequently. I realize that is likely due to the fact that I’m now expecting my own baby (any day now!) and those who are here just for the food likely wouldn’t feel the same way. But it just goes to show that as your life – and blog – changes, there will always be people out there who resonate with you. Have a great day!

I sit here reading all these great comments to myself and think, there you have it, don’t get down on yourself or your blog, the good comments far outweigh the bad :-). Blogging isn’t easy nor does it pay the best either, some readers HAVE to understand what the sponsored posts mean: you get to continue on this space. It’s tough when you work your tail off to create original content & your millions of bosses criticize, take it in stride and choose to shrug it off. Moving on, my first baby is EXACTLY the same age as Grayson, like to the day, so I relate to your posts more than ever! Thank you for keeping it real, I appreciate it far more than you’ll ever realize. I too, am just starting to get excited to get back into the kitchen, resume my normal ways and your food posts are hitting the spot with the family. This recipe is exactly what I needed for a perfect fall treat. Keep it up girl & hold your head high!

I’ve been reading your blog for at least 6 years…almost the beginning! Please don’t stop blogging! I truly think the blog has become even more personal since Grayson was born. Stay true to your passions for whatever you feel like blogging. It is your blog! I will remain a dedicated reader!

    All the best to you!!

Hah this is sort of funny to me because I was just telling my husband how happy I am that my favorite food blogger had a baby because now more of your recipes are fast and easy! I have a four year old and a 21-month-old and while I enjoyed reading your blog anyway I appreciate the simpler recipes for sure!

I’ve only been reading for a little bit now (just before you were pregnant), but I love the way the blog has morphed. It reflects you. It’s your blog and only you can decide the direction it takes. It’s too bad you’ve gotten negative comments. As Thumper always said, “If you don’t have something nice to say…”
Keep up the great work! I’m definitely still here for the ride!

    Hey Jenna!
I’ve been reading your blog for many years now and I actually don’t think I have ever commented on any of your posts before.. or maybe I have!? Anyways.. I just wanted to say that even though your blog has changed I still love coming here to see what you’re up to! Life changes and people need to accept that, especially for a new mom! I’m not a mom but I can only imagine the changes you are going through. Anyways, keep writing about whatever you love; just do you!

I love the new direction of the blog. I’ve been a reader for years and I like that it reflects where you currently are in life. Maybe because we’re just about the same age and I just had a baby too? I know exactly what you mean by being uninspired in the kitchen. Maybe embrace it and post occasional “thrown together” meals to help us other new mamas with ideas? Or ask for easy meal ideas (little active prep or clean up) from your readers and write them/ photograph them beautifully? And I love pictures/ updates about Baby Grayson, especially items or activities you love. You definitely caught my interest in your Montessori baby class. I’d like to hear more about that. And I loved your apple trip post. It was a really fun read. Just some ideas. I’m sure you’ll come up with something great.

I found your blog approximately 2 months after discovering that I am pregnant (due in 3 weeks!), and I have to say that I’ve been following you specifically BECAUSE of your family posts. Keep them coming 🙂 Love the recipes too, of course. I’ve made 3 of your slow cooker recipes to freeze as post-baby meals. Don’t let the haters get you down.

Hi there I’ve been reading your blog for well over a year now! I worked in an office with Rocky Slaughter and he lent me your book and said I should check out your blog which I did and loved it! It was also entertaining to read a book with some one in it that I know! As I read the book I went back in your blog and followed along with the time frames! I’ve loved watching your life change and I actually love seeing your life posts and they are what keeps me coming back!

Been a reader for a few yrs and have a 3 yr old now. Don’t apologize! Life is so different once you have a baby. Your time is not your own, even with a toddler;) I was a complete zombie for the first 4 months of my sons life, nursing round the clock with very little sleep. The first yr is very hard when you’re sleep deprived and just trying to acclimate to life as a new mom.

I enjoy your blog as it evolves, like you. That’s genuine. Please feel free to write and post whatever inspires you! Take care!

    Hi Jenna,

I’m a newer reader and love your blog! I agree with some of the comments i’ve skimmed through- it’s your blog and your life, I’m just happy to read along and see life things as much as food things- keep being faithful with what God has given you and you’ll be great. Thanks for your sensitivity to your readers but I just want you to feel encouraged to have the freedom to do whatever you want with this space, your space. ENJOY!

I have been a reader for YEARS. Since nearly the beginning–of course your blog has changed after having a baby. Its exciting to read about your new life as a mom and Grayson is adorable. Personally, I havent found the transition of the blog jarring at all–maybe because I also follow you on Instagram. I found the shift from when you went to posting all your meals to just recipes to be more traumatic for me. 🙂 Keep doing what you are doing. Its all great and no matter what someone is bounds to be unhappy but Im not that person!

I stumbled on ELR a couple years ago while looking for a blog on running, and as a nutritionist was drawn to the food (albeit your posts are not always particularly “healthy”). So why is it in my favorites bar? And why do I check every other day? It must be the “live”/life component that makes you/yours so successful as demonstrated my the many comments today holding you up, encouraging you not to be discouraged by others who feel comfortable saying something they would never say to your face. Seriously, they are the same people who give negative reviews to movies, books, hotels, for gosh sakes, even the National Parks get negative reviews for being “boring”. Humans are drawn to genuine humans, especially those who are good writers and have an SLR camera 🙂 that makes all food look delicious. Most importantly someone who is kind and authentic. You could never write about running, you could post recipes for chopped liver and you would still have a following genuinely interested in your life. We are all interested in each others lives, but you Jenna, are kind enough to share yours. We all thank you for that – even the naysayers out there. They clearly were never taught the Golden Rule.

ps. All that said, when you feel like it, I totally think you could consider posting short cut meals, even a portion of a quick-throw-it-together meal. No exact recipes necessary. I have never followed a recipe in my life. I look a photo, glance at the ingredients and wing it, usually adding multiple veggies and omitting the empty calorie ingredients. No one complains (but then I don’t post on a blog:) It would definitely help the majority of people out there who open their refrigerator at 5pm and think “What should I eat?”. I got 15 minutes – go……
    Just a thought.
Never quit writing in some form. You are very very good.

I love your blog! I have been reading for a few years, met you in Birmingham, Al for your book signing and just think you are all around fun! For what it’s worth, your little space on the internet is one which I have continued to follow the past three years. I appreciate your authenticity. If anything, I feel as though you’ve become more “genuine” over the years, as you’ve started to share your heart in posts on faith, fashion and living. Thank you for the recipes, the stories, the tips and recaps… I look forward to continuing to follow your blog, however frequent or infrequent the posts may come!
P.S. I respect that your family and real life come before your career and blog…Means you’ve got a heck of a real life and priorities ordered to reflect so…that’s winning, in my mind!! 🙂

Jenna – I’ve been a silent reader for five years now, but just want to say I love your blog and it’s one of the only ones I consistently come back to every week!! Your posts from food to life events have made me smile through the end of my college days to law school to starting a big girl law job so keep doing you ! I’ve loved watching the blog evolve the past few years as my own life evolved, and I think that’s why I keep coming back ! Hang in there, and have a good weekend !

Hey, life changes and it’s only natural that your blog will change. I’ve been reading FOREVER and I don’t mind the shift at all! Soooo….I’ve been quietly reading your blog now for six years now (whoa! can’t believe I’ve been reading blogs for that long now…), and I just wanted to let you know how much I love and adore your “life” posts. Of course, I always appreciate the recipes. I’ve cooked many a good meal because of the great food creations you’ve posted on here. But the reason I keep coming back to this space is because of you. I love hearing about your life, your triumphs, your struggles. It always feels so relatable, and frankly, I always get more excited when I see a lifestyle post in my Feedly rather than a recipe. I hope that you continue to craft and mold this space into what is most authentically “you” and never feel like you have to apologize for it. Even though a number of your readers never post comments (i.e. me…until today), I hope that you know how many of us really appreciate what you put out into the world via your corner of the internet. It is true and authentic and inspiring. Thanks again, Jenna.

Ive been following your blog for a few years now, and I continue to love it! I love the recipes, but I also love the fashion stuff, the family stuff, all of it. I dont even have kids, but still love to see and hear about Grayson, and the little weekend adventures ya’ll take. Keep doing what your doing! You have such a fun, positive attitude, and there are a lot of people who will just keep on reading as long as you blog. I have been reading your blog for a few years now and I love it! I make your recipes all the time and everyone always wants the recipes. I’ve been reading your blog for several years, and I can honestly say that it has always, without fail felt true to you (as much as I can say that without knowing you personally). I enjoy all your posts because they are well written and insightful, even if some of them don’t relate to my own life directly. This is all to say, keep writing what you feel inspired to write – the genuine quality of your posts is what makes your blog so good and so enjoyable to read.

I’ve been following your blog for probably about 5 years, but don’t think I have EVER taken the initiative to comment… Your blog’s vibe is different than it used to be. But I still love it and will continue to read! I have 3 (almost 4) kiddos of my own, and I like reading about what other moms are going through, new or seasoned. I’m also relieved to know that I’m not the only one feeling uninspired in the kitchen lately! There are a handful of your recipes that have become staples in my home – your Cuban black beans and rice come to mind – and I love that. I sure hope you keep blogging for a good long while, no matter how infrequently, and I will be reading when you do. 🙂

A million comments later: I’m also a long time follower of your blog, and the only time I typically quit a blog is when they talk too much about races and running, so you’ve had my attention for a good looong time now. There are so many people out here that you will never be able to please everyone, which you seem to know all too well, and we really appreciate your sweet consideration in discussing this issue that came up. The reason I stick with certain blogs is because I am following a story of growth and change, and in this case it is your story of growth and change. If it stayed the same forever it would be stagnation. I’m also super intrigued with mommyhood (not quite on the horizon yet, but probably in the not so distant future), so I love your non food posts actually more than your recipe posts. Just do your thang! We’ll keep loving you

This is YOUR blog – yes it is for us readers – but at the end of the day what you post is your decision. Reader feedback is always great and sometimes necessary – but don’t feel the need to apologize for lifestyle change.

I’ve been stowing away your mommy posts for a day when I get there and enjoy reading the content whether I relate to it, will eat it, etc.

THANK YOU for being willing to share ups/downs of life and for your honesty.

I love your blog! Also, I feel like once someone says one negative or critical thing, people are all too happy to jump on that wagon. Am I right here?!

I love that you are real with what is going on in your life. Lets all be honest, some nights it’s gourmet, some nights it’s take out and some nights you just want something easy so that you don’t have to stand in the kitchen and clean. We all eat cheese and crackers or a baked potato for dinner some nights so I love that you include something that realistically can be made with 2 pots and in 30 minutes. Whether you are a new mom, a 20 something on a ramen diet or empty nesters, we all like an easy comfort food recipe.

And we all like it when people are real about their lives.

Don’t apologize for being yourself and showing others who you really are, after all, that is why we love you in the first place.

I love your blog — no matter what stage of life you are at! From your recipes, to your diaper posts. Keep it true to you. Your readers will either come along for the ride or get lost. 🙂

Btw, it looks like the recipe is missing the vanilla extract measurement for the cupcake part (I made them last night and YUM! but just added a tsp for good measure since it was mentioned in the instructions.)

    Keep on!! 🙂

Ok so I have been reading for yeaaaaars but rarely comment. I don’t know why not but that’s neither here nor there. I have a 17 month old girl and a 3 month old boy so I completely, 100% understand seasons of life and all that business. I also fully understand how the daily meals and menus evolve with kiddos around. It’s been a difficult thing for me to try and find quick, easy, and mostly healthy/clean meals to prepare for my family so please, drop us momma foodies as many momma friendly meals as possible! But anyway, you do you. Blog when you feel like it and blog what you feel like blogging. Most of us are probably going through the same things!

Jenna – I actually love the direction your blog is taking you. I like the variety – family posts, sponsored posts, baby posts, life in general, recipes, etc. I have enjoyed seeing you and your husband become a family, and even though I am not a parent myself, I enjoy the baby posts where you discuss what works best for you. I understand that everyone has their own opinion and those that are dissatisfied with your content recently have every right to their opinion, but please remember that there are many out there that love your blog, regardless of where you go with it, because it is YOU and we support YOU (and hubby and Grayson…). 🙂 Best of luck on getting over the blog burn out, and I’ll be here whether you post once a day, once a week or once a month!

Yeesh, I hate it when people make bloggers feel like crap – especially those who have wee ones. There’s enough pressure dealing with a baby, you don’t need that crap. And regarding the sponsored posts – how the heck do people think all of your content can remain online without some form of income?! I read your blog because I love your voice. And it reminds me to make your recipes I love. Ignore the haters! xo

I read the blogs that I do, not necessarily to pattern my life or cooking after that of the blogger, but because of the sensibility reflected in the blog. If I get a recipe, a book recommendation or a travel tip, so much the better but it’s the life story I am following. Keep on, as long as you feel like sharing this with us.

Sweet Jenna. I’ve been a loyal reader for a few years now. Do I love the food pics and shared recipes? Yep, I’ve made quite a few of them. However, your post about everyday life, book reviews, favorite products, motherhood …. Those are the ones that make you incredibly relatable. If everyone stayed the same, didn’t grow/mature, life would be so boring. You’re a wonderful chef/recipe developer/author, but you are an amazing wife/mother. You radiate joy and love in every post and Instagram pic that you share of your life right now. That’s why I’m drawn to your blog now and will continue to read for as long as you continue to share. Hugs mama!!!

Um. Is the same girl whom taught me via her blog how to make risotto thinking of quitting her blog? I hope not! I have been a longtime reader and felt like you were right there in the kitchen with me showing me how to execute some restaurant like meals.

I’m sorry to hear you’re getting inappropriate comments…some people can be really rude. I mean, you are now a busy mom and you’re doing your best! I’m sure you’ll make a good decision about the future of your blog but even if you do decide to bow out, its your choice. But thank you Jenna for adding a bit of kitchen wisdom to my life!!

Love your blog!!!! How could it not change as your life changes:). Love your “favorite things” post, your “book recommendation” post, recipes….all of it. Some of the books you have recommended have changed my life…”Seven” and “Crazy Love” especially. It only makes sense that your blog will change as your life changes and having a baby changes you…. forever, embrace it! Your blog is at the top of my favorites list. I check it everyday and understand that for me and for you too, that life is precious, and balance is important. I like that I don’t get a posting everyday. Why? Because I know that when I do see an article posted from you, it is authentic, carefully written, and not forced. Do as you please, take care of your family, and make you happy. That’s when we get the best author of these wonderful blog posts. My favorite blog hands down, because of your creativity and honesty. Girl, I have read your blog since you just about started it. I can remember when you shared even the worst photos and I’m still here. I honestly love how the blog has morphed. Honestly, the only thing I’m not a fan of is some of the recent is marketing that you are doing with another company, but frankly it doesn’t bother me to the point that I would stop reading. ?? baby and mama posts and you keeping it real. As long as YOU are happy, that’s what should matter. ? from Charleston to you. ????

I personally love your blog and seeing your life change. I feel that your message has remained the same. You love Jesus, your family, food and travel. People are so quick to criticize but please don’t listen to that nonsense. Keep doing what you are doing!!

I have read your blog since it was a diary of everything you ate. Most of my
Go to recipies are yours. While chicken chili and lentil
Meatloaf to name a few. And now that I
Too have a young child, I still appreciate your
Blog. I have made both Green Giant dishes
Simply bc I just don’t have the time I used to to cook or meal
Plan. So I #1 totally understand and applaud your change
Of priorities and #2 am loving the easier dishes.
Your green giant soup is in fact one of the first
Things I have made “from scratch” since having my son 🙂

Follow your heart. You will never get this time back
    With him.

I have been reading since the beginning and I will say that I do miss your old way of blogging. I rarely read the recipes you post now. I so miss the glimpses of your daily life that you used to share. Please bring more of them back!!!

    Jenna,
I think that it may be difficult for people who don’t have children to understand how having a baby can rock your world and change your priorities. I too used to love to cook and couldn’t wait to get in the kitchen to try all your recipes! However after my little girl came, I really just want something fast, healthy, and easy. Being a stay at home mom is wonderful, but it’s also the most draining thing I’ve ever done. So my cooking mojo has gone out the window! So don’t be down on yourself for feeling uninspired in the kitchen.

Lifestyle blogs are about life, and life is constantly changing, evolving. So I say embrace what is important to you right now, whatever that may be, and I will be here to read about it!

As a reader for 5 years, I just have to say I really appreciate you addressing this. A lot of bloggers just ignore the comments and never say anything about, so it is really impressive you address it straight on. I may not relate to as many as the posts since I am not a mother yet, but I still do like reading and hearing about your life. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I sincerely appreciate you addressing the comments!

Very few of my friends are still doing the exact same job they did 7 years ago, how unfair you’ve received negative comments. Don’t feel bad that your priorities/interests have changed. I love your blog and will miss it, but I support whatever decision you make!

Don’t listen to the negative Nellys! I have been reading your blog for years now, loved your book, and am obsessed with your cute chubby cheeked instagram photos of your bub! Blogs aren’t meant to be set in concrete, and they change as your life changes. Time will tell what the new path for Eat Live Run will be, but you can be sure whichever way this blog goes, you will have many many loyal readers, especially this Aussie one 🙂

I, too, had cooking burn-out in the kitchen when my son was born in 2012 and guess what…it still hasn’t come back! I nursed/pumped for a year, then made his baby food, and now make sure he has a balanced diet of solids. PLUS a full-time job and trying to have a life for myself. Of course your life is going to change and I like the new blog! BTW, your Spinach Feta Turkey Burgers are a fave in my house – including my almost 2 year old! It’s my go to meal with some sauteed onions and mushrooms for the adults.

I am a LONG time reader from when you first started this blog and was actually bummed when it went from a healthy living/lifestyle blog to a recipe blog. Being a mother of a 2.5 year old with another on the way, I thoroughly enjoy your lifestyle posts and prefer them over the recipe posts. No offense, but the internet is saturated with recipes these days. I enjoy getting a peek into other people’s lives (especially moms!) and seeing things I can relate to. I actually stopped reading your blog when you transitioned to a recipe blog because I found it so impersonal and I rarely make recipes from blogs, but check in more often now looking forward to posts about your family and life.

Hi Jenna- while I’m a bit older than you, we have done things in common which originally brought me to your blog and now we have babies born just days apart — so of course I’m interested in all things Grayson. 🙂 Still I read ELR for your voice and that voice is welcome to discuss anything it deems relevant. I love your aesthetic and cooking but I read to hear what interests You. What ever that is. Look forward to continuing to follow the blog.

Hi Jenna–are you willing to share your blog recommendations? (not a comment on not reading yours—while I do fall on the side that might be less inspired by the content these days, I still read it and at the end of the day it’s YOUR blog, if not up to you to evolve then who is it up to? That’s the magic of blogging!)

    Hi Jenna,

I’ve never commented on any blog before but I feel moved to say that while your blog has changed over the years (I started reading in college and have enjoyed your posts, whatever the content), I think your voice has not changed and that is why I keep coming back to read it! People will always be unsatisfied with something, I just pray that you continue to be you :). Thank you!!

Although rather new here, I think you are doing an amazing job. Having a baby and trying to do anything else, is well, darn near impossible! Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself as much time as you want with your beautiful little guy. Trust me, he is so worth it.

    Sending a hug…

Former food blogger and fellow mama here… Just want to pipe in and be another voice of encouragement in response to this post. You are experiencing so many new things every day, settling in to motherhood, making mistakes, and figuring out where blogging fits into this new chapter – all while sharing your journey with the world. This is bold and courageous, and from where I sit, it seems like you are doing a damn good job. Keep up the good work!

I discovered your blog while you were pregnant, so I knew things would be different for you but I’m not familiar with your pre-baby blog. I have to say I don’t mind 🙂 As someone who hopes to start a family in the next couple of years, I’m coming to understand more and more that life changes–and a blog, while it’s very public, is first and foremost your own thoughts and your own life reflected.

I made these cupcakes yesterday for my baby who was home from college and he declared they were “the best ever!” Ditto the rest of the family. So, thank you for the great recipe!

I have also been a long time reader and have see all the changes that have gone on with this blog. I actually feel like your changes are going right along with mine and now I’m even more excited to read because I have my own baby on the way due to arrive the end of December! While I still love your recipes, I look forward to baby posts & updates because I can relate to them. The beauty of a blog is having the freedom to do as you wish – I rather you stay true to you that put up posts that you don’t believe in or care about just for the sake of who your readers are. The writing is still all you and that’s what I enjoy the most.

As a longtime reader and blogger myself, I’m sad that you had to defend yourself, but I think you can see from all your loving comments that we love your blog, regardless of how many recipes v. real-life posts you do. I think it’s wonderful to see the evolution of someone’s life from dating to marriage to motherhood. I write a blog about trying to get healthier by eating better and exercising more … but does that make me a terrible person when I admit that I hate pizza and dessert on my birthday? No! We’re all human and we’re lucky to have a place to voice whatever it is we want to. That’s what blogs are for and readers who appreciate realness will appreciate that every time. More power to you!

I made these last night for my family. They are awesome! I did not see an amount for the vanilla in the cake recipe, so I just added a teaspoon which I thought was pretty standard. They turned out great. Also, for the frosting, I couldn’t get it creamy without any liquid. Maybe because it’s winter my butter was a little harder, even though it was at room temperature. So I added a little bit of apple cider while it was mixing. Also turned out great! Thanks for the great recipes–love those!

I also love the updates about your son. I think your website is a great mix of recipes and life in general. Becoming a mother changes you permanently in so many ways, I don’t think a blog could stay the same! Good luck and please keep writing! ????
