Happy Tuesday!
I think the most asked question you guys are asking me right now is what are you feeding Luke?! I will happily share, friends! Both of my kids started solids around the 5 month mark. They both started with purees (I think kabocha squash was first on the list for both) and then, rather quickly, moved into finger foods. I had no idea what the term “babyled weaning” was with Grayson. It just felt natural for both of us to move past purees around the time he was seven months old. I remember making spaghetti, minestrone and pot roast, and just letting him go at it. It was SO fun and SO messy.
When Luke started flat out refusing purees (especially the spoon – he WILL NOT be spoon fed!) around the time he was six and a half month old, I started researching actual babyled weaning ideas and foods. He was so much happier when I just put bits of whatever we were eating right on his high chair tray and, I’ll be honest, it was way easier for me, too, because I didn’t have to sit and spoon feed him purees. When you have multiple kids, every second counts! Dinnertime is much easier now that I have both kids at the table happily eating the same meal.
Luke is such a good eater, already. He loves EVERYTHING. It’s so much fun. And you guys already know what kind of eater Grayson is. 😉 Let’s just say his favorite food is smoked salmon.
Anyway, this pancake recipe is one that I make all the time because everyone in our house enjoys them! They also freeze beautifully so I will often make a double or even triple batch if I have time. This was one of the first finger foods I gave to Luke and they have always been a hit. I love that I can just whip up a batch easily in my blender! I often times top these with homemade jam, fresh fruit or almond butter and raw honey (for Grayson, not Luke yet).
I hope you guys love these as much as we do. They are gluten-free, high protein and a great snack option to stash in your diaper bag for trips to the park. I think this ties with sweet potato fries for my kids’ current favorite snack. 🙂 Also, obviously they are great for adults, too!
- 2 whole bananas
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 5 whole eggs
- 1.5 cups rolled oats gluten-free
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
-
Combine all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.
-
Cook pancakes on an oiled skillet until cooked on each side. Serve with maple syrup, jam, fresh fruit or peanut butter.

March 28, 2017 at 7:12 amoh my gosh ADORABLE <333 I don't have any kiddos yet (unless you count the furry variety) but I will make these for myself! They seem like a great easy on the stomach pre-run option!

March 28, 2017 at 8:52 amI’m so excited about this recipe! We just started baby led weaning this past weekend and are having SO much fun with it. As soon as he’s tried a few more foods on their own, I will definitely be making these, I can’t wait! Baby brunch 🙂

March 28, 2017 at 10:54 amAwesome! I’m going to make a big batch of these this weekend for my 10-month-old and nearly-3-year-old!! My 10-month-old has been eating oatmeal and pureed fruit mixed in for breakfast, but I’m almost out of the fruit purees (I made them all and froze them in 1 oz. cubes), so, starting next week, I need to send her to daycare with other breakfast options (until she’s one…then, thank God, daycare will take over feeding her). And, starting next week, my older daughter will be transitioning from daycare (where she is fed) to full-time preschool and I’ll have to send her to school with snacks and lunch. Anyway, I’m totally stressing out about adding all this meal prep to my already busy schedule as a full-time working mom, so these pancakes will help! Please keep recipes like this (make ahead, freezable, great for kid lunches, healthy) coming!!

March 28, 2017 at 10:57 amOh, also, it looks like Grayson goes to preschool with a packed lunch and I’d love to see more of your lunch box ideas. I just bought a book with Trader Joe’s lunch box recipes and am anxious to see what’s in there (love TJ’s!). This whole lunch box thing is giving me major anxiety – ha!

March 29, 2017 at 7:08 pmWhatever you’re comfortable with! We’ve been giving Luke egg since 5 months.

April 6, 2017 at 11:29 amIt’s not a worry if it’s in a baked good. You more need to be careful if it something like scrambled eggs, etc. Most doctors are pushing to start eggs sooner than a year.

March 28, 2017 at 9:17 pmThoughts on sneaking in some spinach to this recipe?

March 29, 2017 at 4:53 amThe pictures look so perfect, you must be scared that Chip & Chap are coming over for them 😉
I loved it as a kid when I saw how Donald was making these pancakes, got so jealous and now I have the recipe!
Thanks for sharing, here in Germany we do them as “Pfannkuchen”, they are a lot thinner.
But please no spinach (that’s another cartoon), I think it doesn’t work with sirup.
So long, Jana

March 29, 2017 at 7:16 amMade a big batch of these yesterday – a hit with all of us (including my 3 year old and 18 month old)! I threw a few mini chocolate chips in 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

Also, you must have the cutest babies in the world Jenna! I’ve been reading your blog for years (so glad you’re back) and truly love seeing your photos of Grayson and Luke. They are such happy kids!

March 30, 2017 at 3:51 amThese look great! I regret not doing BLW with our son. At 16 months he basically refuses to self feed unless its strawberries and lives off oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit. We hide veggies in everything but he is a tough cookie! Next time I’ll definitely go the BLW route!
Jessica
March 31, 2017 at 10:30 pmEh, I’m doing BLW with my kiddo (11 months) and he just drops all the food that he doesn’t want to eat off his tray. He is SUPER intentional and focused about it…it is a tiny bit hilarious but also frustrating at times. Point being, it’s definitely good to offer babies lots of different types of foods and try to develop their taste buds, but they are independent people with their own minds too, so don’t feel like it’s all your fault if your baby is going through a picky phase. 🙂

March 30, 2017 at 9:14 amThanks!! I’ll give these a try with Rhys.

March 31, 2017 at 11:23 amSweet potato and avocado “fries” are our current snack go-to but I’m definitely going to be integrating these into the rotation!

April 1, 2017 at 7:47 amThese were DELICIOUS! I had a lot of trouble getting them to cook through without burning, I think because of the extra sugar in the applesauce and bananas, compared to usual pancakes. Maybe I need to switch pans.
Erica
April 4, 2017 at 9:41 amYes!! I just came on here to see if anyone else had this issue. Insides not fully cooked but outsides burned. I also assumed it was all the sugar. I used butter in a non-stick skillet and eventually just had to cook them on VERY low heat which took forever to cook. Jenna, any suggestions? What are we doing wrong? Tips appreciated!

April 4, 2017 at 5:54 pmFinally made these today. I dropped pecans into my pancakes after pouring them onto the skillet. I only did some with pecans cause I have kids who don’t love nuts. Thanks for the recipe.

May 11, 2017 at 12:49 pmI’ve been making this about once a week – we all love it! Today I realized I only had one cup of oatmeal, so I added in 1/2 cup of buckwheat flour as a substitute, and it worked great. Thanks again for the recipe!

May 19, 2019 at 6:27 amI can’t get these to Cook properly, they are so runny. They just burn and are completely unflippable. What have I done wrong?
Tanya
May 18, 2020 at 4:17 pmMe too! Every recipe I try from Pinterest that is “baby pancakes” has turned out like crap. They won’t flip and they just burn. I have them on a medium low heat and have to cook them forever on each side just feel safe that the eggs have cooked thoroughly and then by that time I have burnt pancakes. It really is the MOST frustrating thing.

April 30, 2021 at 4:47 amI say thin them with some almond milk.

April 30, 2021 at 4:45 amFor smaller ones (6 months to a year) who are still learning I recommend adding some almond milk (or other milk) to thin it out a little. They are a little gummy from the oats and it made it a little difficult to eat.
