These are my favorite kind of posts to read! I’m super nosy and love to know how everyone else fills their days. Truthfully, my days look A LOT different than they used to and it took some adjustment. I’m still coming to terms with being okay with where I’m at right now and being present in the moment with Grayson, whatever that looks like. All days don’t have to be “productive” — sometimes, the best days are spent just playing with him and lots of cuddles.
So here, we go…starting at 3:30am…
3:30ish – nurse Grayson and goes right back to sleep. We’ve come a long way in a couple months! This middle of the night nursing session used to take almost an hour and now he eats and goes back down in under twenty minutes.
5:30am – Grayson fusses briefly. I let him fuss for a few minutes before sending Adam in to shoosh him back to sleep.
7am – Up for the morning! Feed Grayson and read the bible on the She Reads Truth app. Working my way through Hebrews right now! Adam makes me coffee while I nurse.
7:30 – 8:15am – playtime! Adam plays with Grayson before he leaves for work, then Grayson hangs out in the bouncy seat while I eat breakfast. We usually read a book or two.
8:30am – Change diaper and strap Grayson in the car seat while I pump his bedtime bottle. After pumping, he is usually asleep and we head out to Stroller Strides. Grayson takes his first nap of the day in the stroller while I work out.
10:30am- I finish Stroller Strides, wake Grayson up and nurse him in the backseat of my car before heading home.
10:45-noon – Lunchtime/playtime!
12-2pm – Grayson naps in the crib and I shower, get ready and catch up on emails. If he wakes up early, I try to shoosh him/get him to go back to sleep three times. If on the third time, he doesn’t fall back to sleep, I take him out and call an end to nap time. Sometimes he sleeps for 40 minutes, sometimes he sleeps for 2 hours. It varies every day.
2pm – I nurse Grayson then he hangs out in his bouncy seat, playpen or swing for an hour.
3pm – Grayson goes down for another nap in his crib and I clean the house. When he wakes up, we usually run errands…grocery store/farmer’s market/ect.
5pm – Nurse Grayson for his “supper” feeding. After he eats, he usually hangs out in the playpen that I set up in the kitchen while I start making dinner.
6pm – Strap Grayson in his swing for a 40 minute catnap. While he naps, I continue to work on dinner.
6:45pm – Grayson wakes up, usually with a vengeance! He has the tendency to be fussy in the evenings, so right after he wakes up I usually put him in the stroller and we walk around the neighborhood until Adam gets home at 7:10.
7:30pm – Adam and I give Grayson his bath. I put him in his jammies, warm up his bottle and hand him over to Adam who gives him his last feeding and puts him to bed. While that’s happening, I’m busy finishing dinner, picking up the house and setting the table.
8pm – Grayson is asleep. Adam and I sit down to dinner, have some wine and enjoy each other’s company!
8:30 – 10pm – Lately, I’ve been doing these crazy canning projects at night after Grayson goes to bed. Last week, I made hot pickled okra, spicy pickled green beans and plum jam. Tonight I may do peach salsa!
10pm – We go to bed, monitor on next to me.
* we follow the Moms on Call method! Baby schedules are a hot button topic and I’m not looking for a debate in the comments. This is what works for us. Something else might work great for you!

August 21, 2014 at 2:48 pmLooks like you have a good schedule going! My girls are 21 and 18 (!) but I can put myself right back into that era by reading about your day. It is tiring and wonderful at the same time. Hold on to that sweetie with the chubby little cheeks and drink it all in! Soon enough he will be asking for the keys to the car! π
Laura @ Raise Your Garden
August 25, 2014 at 4:36 amI always get scared when I read comments about girls growing up too fast! I have to girls who will be the same ages as yours as they grow and develop. Holding onto them tightly right now!!! No keys please, my first just learned to ride her bike with no training wheels and she’s only 4 (and she’s a peanut so no basketball for her I guess.)

August 21, 2014 at 2:52 pmI love Moms on Call. We follow the principles but I go with her. Sometimes we have a 4am feed, sometimes we don’t. Sometimes we feed at 6 or 6:30 or 7am, but the three hour blocks save us. I’ve never don’t the cry it out method, but she’s worked it out herself. It helped add structure to our day. We all have to approach parenting sensibly… And this to me is sensible. She’s happy and thriving and it’s also helped my husband and I parent together.
Also, he’s adorable and you’re doing an amazing job. I’m gonna start reading to her more during the day now! Good idea!

August 21, 2014 at 3:37 pmThank you for introducing me to moms on call! My baby Emily and I love it!!
She’s 2 months old and this looks just like our schedule but I’m doing the love your lower body exercises at home right now from barre3. (I saw somewhere that you have this book too!).
Some days I say forget errands and I let her sleep on my chest like today!
Just this week she’s started sleeping until 4 am and then last night she slept until 5am! Fingers crossed this sticks around maybe even starts sleeping all the way to 6 or 7 a mom can dream right.
I love being on this journey and reading yours too. Email me if you want to chat about it. π

August 21, 2014 at 4:12 pmMy daughter just turned 2 months and we’ve just started following MOC. Do you pump before bed size Grayson is getting a bottle? This was fun to read and super helpful! I feel like I have an idea of where we could be in a month! Naps are hard right now! I’m hoping the set daytime nursings will help that.

August 21, 2014 at 4:51 pmJust curious if/when you plan to return to food blogging for the majority of your posts? It seems that the majority of your posts are now centered around being a new parent with recipes sprinkled in.
jenna
August 21, 2014 at 5:45 pmThat’s a good way to describe it. I’ll probably keep up what I’ve been doing for the time being.

August 21, 2014 at 10:03 pmI love it! Prioritizing baby is the best especially in your working mom situation! keep it uuuup π to be entertaining, sharing stories and recipes, while having a baby is immensely more than I could do with a baby that age π

August 21, 2014 at 10:47 pmI love it too! I’m not a mom (yet), but have really enjoyed reading your posts lately. I particularly enjoy how honest you are about the difficult aspects of motherhood, rather than just focusing on how cute your baby is (he’s VERY cute). Have a great day π
alexe
August 22, 2014 at 4:15 amI agree with lindsey! I’m not a mom but I really enjoy those posts. I’ve been reading your blog for at least 6 years now just to read about your life – not in a creepy way lol! (I can’t try most of your recipe since I’m a vegetarian) Keep up the good work! You’re doing (and looking!) amazing! π
Emily
August 22, 2014 at 6:15 amI agree I love it! You’re doing great and I’m honored you’re taking us along through your transition to motherhood and beyond. Grayson is the cutest little man!!

August 22, 2014 at 6:40 amI have always read your blog but I love it even more now with all of the Grayson posts. I’m still a new mom too (2 under 2!) and our babies are only 3 months apart so I love reading about what works for other moms. Plus, your recipes are amazing too. PS: That one recipe for a chicken noodle soup casserole got me through my pregnancy!

August 23, 2014 at 6:24 amJust chiming in as another reader nowhere close to parenthood, I love reading your baby posts! I must be nosy as well because I also find them fascinating! You do you, and we’ll all keep reading / loving your work.

August 21, 2014 at 5:04 pmI am super nosy and love these posts! That picture of Grayson, you, and Dexter (I believe…) is too sweet. You are doing a great job! I hope you know that too!

August 21, 2014 at 5:12 pmLove the timeline, you are quite the busy bee and mr Grayson is too precious, those cheeks!!!
Question for you, did u take all three raw code vitamins each day (pre pregnancy, during, after), I just got mine (don’t tell my family we are planning a family hopefully next year, shh!), but three a day seems like a lot!
I adore your blog — keep up the great work.

August 21, 2014 at 5:17 pmThanks for the peek!
My favourite advice to new moms, my two are 7.5 and 5.75, is that you are the best mom for your kid(s). It doesn’t matter what anybody or any book tells you to do, you do what you feel is best. It’s obviously ok to read and ask about for opinions and strategies, but in the end, no one should make you feel guilty for what you decide to do. Moms have enough reasons to be worried and stressed!

August 21, 2014 at 5:27 pmDay in life style posts are my favourite, and i’m always fascinated to learn how mothers spend their days… I’ve thought of doing one, but university days are such stock standard days!

August 21, 2014 at 6:21 pmI am not a mom, but have been a longtime reader for your recipes and posts about life in general. It’s really interesting to see your transition and I love (and appreciate!) your honesty. Not gonna lie, your day sounds exhausting! But you seem to be doing a darn good job of keeping it all together. I’ve enjoyed your blog over the years, regardless of what you’re writing about, so continue to write about whatever is current for you! It’s always a nice read. π

August 21, 2014 at 7:22 pmLOVE Moms on Call!! It works great for us! I follow a lot of blogs and love honest posts. One day it can be their random thoughts, their monthly favorites, a new recipe they tried, their child’s monthly favorites, new clothes they are loving, etc. It’s whatever they feel like blogging about and I love that. I also love getting a glimpse into other mommy’s schedules and their day-to-day so thanks for sharing!

August 21, 2014 at 8:02 pmThank you for this post! My favorite part…you taking time to read the Bible. I’m a mommy of a 5 year old (Kindergarten day today!!), and I could really use more quiet time with God. Thank you for sharing that you take the time to read the word of God. π Thanks !!

August 21, 2014 at 8:38 pmI am struck by how you are doing 95 percent if this alone! Does your husband work super long days?
Sam
August 22, 2014 at 4:11 amI was actually struck by how involved Adam is. I think it’s patronizing to applaud father’s for being involved, but I don’t think the above characterization is fair! Good for both of you for finding a balance that works!
Sam
August 22, 2014 at 7:13 amGosh. *Fathers, not father’s.

August 22, 2014 at 7:05 amWell, he goes to work at 8am and gets home at 7:15pm. I don’t feel like that’s too long or abnormal these days but he does have a pretty demanding job and he does commute to the city daily. I feel like he is a super active participant when he’s home and on the weekends though!
sarah
August 22, 2014 at 10:14 amI am right there with you, Jenna. My husband leaves for work at 620am and is home at 730pm! Plus he goes to class at night once a week because he is getting his Masters.
lindsey
August 22, 2014 at 6:35 pmSame here! Mine is gone by 6 am and doesn’t always get home until almost 6:30! and then our baby is almost ready to poop out for the night !! (AND he is too, so it’s prettty much mom on call 24/7 365 til eternity, haha.) That’s what weekends are for π Plus, being a stay at home mom automatically means you’re gonna be in charge majority of the time anyway π
Brandy
August 23, 2014 at 5:15 pmMy partner is a doctor so when he works he is gone at 6am and home at 9pm. He literally doesn’t see our baby at all those days. But there trade off are mid week days off etc. gotta take the bad with the good!

August 22, 2014 at 10:28 pmI’m struck by what a rude and nosy question that is.
Geez, Jenna…I truly feel sorry for you and applaud you at the same time, because if I had to read half the comments you do, I would have given up blogging ages ago. Keep up the good work!! I love your blog and how willing you are to be open with the world amidst such sharp and unsolicited criticism.

August 22, 2014 at 4:23 amThanks for the post, guess it am super nosey as well! π I have a question about Moms on Call… When people say they “do” this method — how can I start doing it too? I see that they have a variety of products — did you buy the book? Is there another or better place to start with that method? Seems like it works for a lot of people so I was thinking about giving it a try but I’m not sure where to start.
jenna
August 22, 2014 at 7:04 amYep! I read the book and there’s. Nifty little iPhone app. If you have a newborn their swaddles are great, too. The book explains everything about the schedule.
Bethany
August 22, 2014 at 8:20 amThat is so helpful, thank you!

August 22, 2014 at 10:35 amI was a HUGE Moms on Call follower, and I fully plan to use their program for my second child, as well. In addition to their books, they also offer consultative services (for a fee, of course haha … wouldn’t it be nice if these things were free?!). I paid to email with one of the women for 6 months, but they also do phone consultations. Just FYI, in case you feel like you need a little extra help! π

August 22, 2014 at 4:50 amOh girl, this takes me right back! I love these kinds of posts, too. Your “style” looks a lot like mine was. And that baby of yours looks happy and loved. I think we can complicate almost anything, but our job as a mama is to make them feel safe and loved. And that can look lots of different ways. Good job.

August 22, 2014 at 5:20 amI love your blog! And although I became a fan because of the amazing recipes/food, I am loving this other side of you and the blog. Any chance you’ll be posting about canning or sharing the spicy pickled green beans? I’ve been dying to get into canning and that recipe sounds amazing!
jenna
August 22, 2014 at 8:36 amI’ve been working my way through the “Canning for a New Generation” cookbook and all recipes are out of that book – it’s the best canning cookbook ever! I have made at least a dozen recipes out of it now and they all have been fabulous!

August 22, 2014 at 5:41 amThis is so fantastic! My son is 7 weeks old and we have been following you through your pregnancy adventure and now your new mommy hood. We are also trying to work on a “schedule” for the little man. Nothing rigid just a general sense of his eating and sleeping patterns. When you say you play or have Grayson on his playpen could you share what he is doing in there? I would love to know how to best fill our little man’s quiet awake time.
jenna
August 22, 2014 at 8:36 amWe have a 4moms “breeze”, which is essentially a pack n play. I really love it because it’s super light and I just put it in the kitchen and put some rattles in there for Grayson. It really does entertain him for awhile! he’s just learned how to grip and shake rattles so he loves to do that while I cook.
Laura
August 22, 2014 at 6:16 amsounds like grayson is good at occupying himself! my little girl can play on her activity mat for about 15 minutes before she is ready for some more entertainment π we have a routine of going from the living room, to her room, to the front porch. sometimes we’ll switch things up and i’ll take her to our room! baha
do you feed grayson the 7 oz or whatever moms on call says to feed them at night? we breastfeed as well and i’ve never given her that much at once. a) i don’t think i would be able to pump that much and b) not sure her tummy could handle that much BM at once!
jenna
August 22, 2014 at 7:02 amI do! I am able to pump about 6 oz and supplement with a splash of formula. Grayson usually will wolf it down (maybe leave a bit). I was shocked at first that he could eat that much but I talked to my friend who is a nurse about it and she said it’s totally fine and her own son used to take 9 oz in a bedtime bottle!
Laura
August 22, 2014 at 1:16 pmOkay, thanks!! I will have to give that a try sometime. Maybe the couple extra oz would keep her asleep a little longer at night, too.
sarah
August 25, 2014 at 9:20 amI’m curious why you don’t just add another quick pump session in the day to get those extra 2oz you need instead of using formula? And I learned that babies will just keep eating breast milk because it is so sweet so you can never overfeed your baby on breast milk :o)
sarah
August 25, 2014 at 9:21 amI’m curious why you don’t just add another quick pump session during the day to get those extra 2oz instead of using formula? I also learned that you can never overfeed a baby on breastmilk!
vks
August 25, 2014 at 4:08 pmYou can’t overfeed a baby at the breast. Baby can regulate the flow of milk and switch between and “active” suck and a “non-nutritive” suck, which may be more for comfort. They can switch back and forth in a single session, between let downs. With a bottle they don’t have that level of control — there is one way to suck on a bottle and what comes out is what comes out. It possible for baby to “overeat” on the bottle because they may continue (or switch) to sucking for comfort, but they continue to receive a flow of milk.

August 22, 2014 at 7:38 amWhat a great post! I have a 2 month old so it’s fun to see what other new moms are up to. I’ve been trying to get my little boy on a somewhat predictable schedule, so I think this MOC might be the way to go. Thanks!

August 22, 2014 at 8:43 amI know what you mean by some days don’t have to be “productive,” but nurturing a human life is pretty much the most productive thing you can do! If people didn’t do that we wouldn’t even exist π

August 22, 2014 at 9:05 amHow can I get in on this 4 naps a day thing? Because that sounds great.
jenna
August 22, 2014 at 9:09 amhahaha well according to the schedule we’ve been following he only takes 4 naps a day until he hits 4 months old. then its’ 2 naps a day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon π
Laura
August 22, 2014 at 10:06 ami love my daughter obviously, but dang! i am going to miss all these naps when she turns 4 months old inβ¦.10 days! bahaha. i’ve emailed the MOC ladies before and they said you can do the 5pm catnap until they are 6 months old. i think we’ll keep doing that, because i don’t think my girl can stay awake from 3-7 yet.
Laura
September 14, 2014 at 8:21 pmThis comment is so interesting. I have a 6 month old and he does 3 naps a day and sometimes 4 (a short one around 5ish). I was under the impression that babies did 4 until about 4-5 months and then 3 til 9 months so curious why you would jump to 2… We’ve never done a schedule, but he schedules himself pretty well we just watch for all the cues. I find it so interesting to hear what other people do. I was a nanny for 5 years and my husband helped raise his younger siblings, so we knew a lot about babies going into it and what we wanted. Always interesting to hear about other people’s approaches.

August 22, 2014 at 10:20 amFunny, my first is only 20 months but Moms On Call must be new since I had him. I’m pregnant with #2 so I’m interested to check it out this time. First go round I held my boy basically all day long and nursed on demand which due to minor reflux was every 2hrs for severl months. It was exhausting! He also never (to this day) entertained himself for more than 5 minutes so an hour of awake time in the playpen is a completely foreign concept to me! Sounds like you’ve found a schedule that works for you and an easy going baby who plays along π

August 22, 2014 at 12:14 pmThanks for the intro to Moms on Call! I just read their toddler book, and it has some great advice for my 2 year old!

August 22, 2014 at 9:26 pmLove this post! Thanks for sharing! My little guy is 1 month now so I’m curious what other schedules are…we don’t really have one now but will once I go back to work in a few weeks. Also. August 23, 2014 at 6:49 amI love reading your schedule because it makes me feel normal too:) I had a baby girl on May 23, so Leila is just a little bit younger than Grayson. We also (try to) follow the Moms on Call Schedule. I have a 3:30-4am feed then we go back to sleep until 7sih too. I think the schedule has worked pretty well. I got their phone app and that has been helpful. It has also been a huge adjustment for me to accept that some days are fussy/nursing all the time/sofa cuddling kinda days and other days we do get out too. When we can, we go on stroller walks and errands too. You are doing an awesome job! From one new mama to another, I have to agree that it is both a rewarding and challenging experience everyday. By the way, I am sure you have tons of books for Grayson but one of my favorites is Strega Nona. Since you are a chef I bet you would find it fun to read about the magical pasta pot too! PS- I tried your spicy pork kale soup and it was so delicious.
A.
August 23, 2014 at 8:56 amI may have missed it, but I don’t think that you mentioned the first rule of motherhood. When the baby naps, the mom should nap. Thanks for sharing your schedule. I need to check out the She Reads Truth app. Blessings to you.

August 23, 2014 at 5:20 pmAny tips on getting the three hour window between feedings? My lo is 2 months and 11 lbs and seems to almost demand 2 hr sessions still. I read the Moms on Call book too but didn’t really see any ideas on stretching out time between eating.
Betsy
August 23, 2014 at 9:02 pmMy daughter is 4.5 months old and I constantly have to remind myself that not everyday is a productive day. I’m so used to having my days being pack with errands and activities, it’s taken a lot of adjusting to just chill out and play with my daughter.

August 24, 2014 at 1:52 pmHey Jenna, You are doing a beautiful job! You are at such a sweet time in your baby’s life. Soak up every second! It goes by so fast! I remember everyone telling me that when my boy(now 3) was a little one…. But sadly they were right! Don’t blink….. After following your blog for many many years it is so fun to watch you become a mama! It’s the most important and rewarding “job” you will ever have! Blessings!

August 25, 2014 at 2:02 pmWill have to check out Moms on Call for #2 arriving in early December. We did a VERY modified/soft version of Babywise for #1 and while our girl slept through the night at 9 weeks old, her naps have never fit the BW mold. My husband and I both work 60+ hour work weeks, so a baby on a schedule is a must for us. I LOVE your blog, by the way. Hope this isn’t rude, but love it more now than I did before you were a mom – if that’s possible! Just switched my 11 month old girl to CD’s thanks to you…and plan to do so with #2. THANKS!

August 30, 2014 at 3:26 amI’ve been following your posts on how you cope with your baby boy and all I can say is CONGRATULATIONS! You’re doing a SUPERB job of it, far better than I ever did when my boy was born. I don’t get how people think they always know better than you just because they’ve had a baby (or twelve, who cares!). Each baby is different, each mother is different, each day you spend with your child is different and if you have the ill luck to have a baby that is as fussy as mine was, there really is nothing anyone can do for you but remind you it will pass, which it always does (my baby had colic until he was 6 months old and I wish someone had told me that every second of every day back then). I am now pregnant with my second boy, hoping for a calmer, quieter baby, though realizing that me being calmer and quieter may bring that about more effectively than anything else. Your baby is beautiful, but then again so are you, and I can’t tell you how much I envy you for actually being able to exercise with him! You go, girl, and never mind all the criticism, no one knows what’s best for you and your baby better than you do! π

September 2, 2014 at 4:59 pmJenna,
I love all your posts as of lately, mommy insights along with a recipe here and there. So rarely do we get to see how mothering really goes until we are there, and I’m not there yet, so any preview of what real life as a mom looks like it so wonderful for me to get to observe.
You’re doing great!!

I appreciate you posting about the day-to-day aspects of incorporating a new little one into your life, I am expecting my first in mid October and have found it so useful to read about your pregnancy and first few months as a new mama π Looking forward to staying tuned and benefiting from your advice in the upcoming months!

September 7, 2014 at 6:03 amHow did you get Grayson to be such a good napper? In one of your posts you said he was a catnapper, only 40 min. That’s what I’m going through with my 9 week old. Does he fall asleep on his own?

September 8, 2014 at 1:24 pmhe does now…it took a little training and work to get there though! We follow the Moms on Call plan and it has really helped with naptimes! He used to be a catnapper UNTIL i got the merlin magic sleepsuit! it’s amazing and I’m recommending it to all my friends now π Seriously, his naps went from 30 minutes to 2 hours in the suit. Hope that helps!
