The other night we did something really special!
To celebrate Adam’s birthday, which is TODAY (!), we went and had dinner out at the farm where we get our CSA veggies every week. Once a month, from April to October, the farm hosts true farm-to-table dinners outside in the grass. It was my first time doing anything like this and it was an absolute blast.
We got there around 5pm for a farm tour before dinner. I was especially excited when I saw a big wagon pull up that we’d all be riding around in while touring the farm. I had it in my mind that it would be a walking tour and while I still try to get out a few times a week to walk, a ride is more than welcome. 🙂
Full Belly Farm is an organic, family-run farm about 45 minutes from Sacramento. It was SO cool to meet the family who started the farm back in the early 80’s and hear about how far they’ve come since then.
Adam loved the hen house! Spread out over their 400 acres, they’ve got 2,000 chickens roaming around. Happy chickens = delicious eggs!
And lots of gorgeous almond trees! Everyone who came for the dinner was invited to stay and camp underneath these trees after but…..at 9 months pregnant, this body does not camp. Maybe someday!
hi sheep!
When we got back from the tour, the sun was just starting to set and we all gathered around the table out on the lawn. Anyone who wanted a chance to feed the “bummer” lambs was welcome. Apparently “bummer” lambs are lambs whose mother’s reject them after birth. So sad! They were absolutely adorable and I was so excited to feed them. We were all given beer bottles fitted with nipples and filled with fresh cow’s milk. They were hungry little guys!
Mandatory belly shot:
I’ve been living in stretchy tops like this from Target and I snagged this soft, comfy skirt from Gap for only $6 last week. I thought it would be comfortable to wear in the hospital after giving birth because it has a stretchy, soft waistband.
The food at the dinner was FANTASTIC. Adam and I both agreed it was the best meal we’ve had in a long time. 98% of everything we ate came from the farm {excluding ingredients like salt and some spices…} and it tasted so incredibly fresh.
And yes, we ate lamb after feeding the baby lambs. I was sad about it at first but….the lamb was delicious! Such is farm life, huh? They lived a good life.
The pasta we had completely blew my mind. I had been randomly craving fettuccine alfredo earlier in the week and this satisfied every bit of that craving. It was incredible! So creamy and so fresh…and those fried baby artichokes on top? Swoon. I could have eaten plate after plate.
The peach leaf creme brulee was also pretty life changing. While eating it, I think I said it was the best creme brulee I’ve ever tried…and I still hold to that! It even beats the creme brulee we shared on the first night of our honeymoon in Paris, in my opinion. Peach leaves have an almond taste to them, and I was shocked to find out that there was no almond extract in the creme brulee! It was absolutely perfect {but too dark for a photo}. I need to find someone with a peach tree around here so I can gather the leaves and make my own. So, so, so good.
All in all, it was a fabulous night that ended up with me stretched out in back seat with some braxton hicks contractions on the drive home. What a perfect way to celebrate the love of my life’s birthday. I’m so glad he was born 31 years ago today!

April 16, 2014 at 3:53 pmIt made me very sad that you would look at those babies and shrug, saying they were delicious. They are trusting babies. Our lives are all limited, but I am using mine to try to spread the message that animals are not ours, that mama sheep loved their babies too, and that we can decide, quite comfortably not to hurt babies, mamas, daddy’s, or any other creature whose lives we may see as less important than out own. I wish you only good things, and that you might consider non-violence. Thank you.
jenna
April 16, 2014 at 4:33 pmWhile I do understand where you are coming from, these lamb are specifically bred for food. They are a mainstay at the farm and live for about a year or so in grassy pastures before harvested. They provide food and wool to many, and help keep the farm going year after year.
Stacey
April 22, 2014 at 12:06 pmNon-violence? The consumption of well-cared for, humanely raised and slaughtered animals certainly does not make one a violent person. I had to chuckle when I read “mama sheep loved their babies too”. The bottle fed lambs were orphaned either because their mother died, or because they were rejected by their mothers at birth. This isn’t because the mother is cruel or because they didn’t “love” their babies. It’s a fact of life. If the farmers hadn’t intervened to care for the lambs, they would have quickly died alone and hungry. Instead they are well cared for, and go on to serve a purpose. They will provide wool and food, which is preferable to starving alone in a field without intervention. To each her own– you are more than welcome to live your life as you see fit, as am I. However, because I choose to be an omnivore, I am certainly not participating in violence.
Suzanne
May 2, 2014 at 1:01 pmActually, the way animals are slaughtered is pretty violent so if you choose to eat meat then you are inadvertently supporting that. It would be nice if we could approach killing them in a humane way but do you think anyone wants to spend the extra money to do so? Nope.
I’m not judging those who eat meat but there is something twisted about feeding a baby lamb, eating it for dinner and then saying it had a good life. That’s like killing a privileged child and then saying, “oh well, it had a good life.” It’s life has only just begun!
We can get wool from sheep without killing them or eat meat from an adult animal that has lived more of a life. Eating lamb and veal is just plain unnecessary and whether they were going to die or not from abandonment has nothing do with us slaughtering them. We are the superior species and it should be our duty to protect them.
Karen
April 16, 2014 at 4:23 pmYou are looking adorable as ever, Jenna, and my best wishes to Adam on his b-day! (Excited to meet your little guy!)
