Hey heyyy 🙂
How was your Monday? I loved reading what y’all were thankful for. I’ll tell you what else I’m thankful for: a strong body. I don’t know why I feel the need to mention this right now but guess what?!?
I’ve gain 10 POUNDS since moving to California!
For the first time in my whole life I actually have real curves and you know…it’s not so bad. I might even like it. Heather really nailed it this morning when she talked about the inability to size up to our society’s unrealistic beauty standards. So, so true. As a culture in whole, we have suuuuuuuuch a disordered, unhealthy perception of what beauty really is. I’m not going to lie—at first I might have been a little freaked out about gaining 10 pounds but…it’s grown on me (no pun intended muhahaha). I’ve had several trusted friends of the opposite sex tell me that I look much better now than I did, say, five months ago and I feel like I sort of “fill out my clothes better”, so to speak. I think it might be because my butt has grown bigger but who knows. 😉 You’ve gotta laugh at these things…and seriously, I’ve been laughing hard. All five of us have gained weight since moving here and it’s actually quite humorous when you really think about it. I think these 10 lbs I’ve gained have hailed from the tastiest and best calories I’ve ever consumed. Rock on.
What was I saying?
Oh yeah, I’m thankful for a strong body because it got me through a crazy intense spin class this morning! For some reason spinning is just so much harder on Monday morning, no?
After my workout, I chugged some grass in the car on the way to work. Keepin’ it classy.
I also had half a AG protein bar for a double shot of superfood—
Lunch was standard and rather boring. A hummus and turkey sandwich on whole wheat + 2 kiwis:
But my snack was out of this world!!
This was my first time trying this Honest Foods bar and it was to die for. Seriously…so freakin’ delicious. And filling, too! I ate this at 2:30 and was set for the next few hours, hands down. I loved the chew!
You know what else was to die for?
That would be my dinner, which was pancakes and a fried egg. I love breakfast for dinner (can I get a BFD?!) and have a very loving relationship with Kodiak Cakes pancake mix. I still can’t believe I pay $8.00 for pancake mix but this is one of those things that is just worth it. I promise. So tonight I just used my standard half cup of mix/half cup of water and made two fluffy pancakes, topped with TJ’s yogurt, almond butter and maple syrup (duh). It was fabulous.
Because we are besties and all, I was telling Kevin tonight about frozen banana soft serve and how genius it is. He was very much intrigued about the idea of pureeing whole frozen bananas in the vita-mix and having it turn out like perfect froyo from the heavens (as in, he is making it tomorrow). Talking about it made me want it, so naturally I whipped up some and topped it with dark chocolate chips—-
The problem was that I was SO excited about this and I took a picture on my blackberry to send Kevin to prove to him how awesome it is that I forgot until it was almost gone to take a photo for the blog. It looked really pretty before I devoured it. Sorry.

November 23, 2009 at 9:28 pmLove breakfast for dinner! The banana soft serve is genius. Is it simply a frozen banana? Or, do you add milk? Sounds like something I need to try… 🙂

November 23, 2009 at 9:42 pmHey sweetheart, I would say that the 10lb gain is an amazing thing as well. You know like when you are in a great relationship and you gain on a little love weight. You are in love with your new life, job,California, how everything has change for you over the past few months. Although, we may feel a little guilty over weight gain, at least you enjoyed every second of it 🙂 Love your site by the way!

November 23, 2009 at 9:49 pmI’m sure Kevin will just see the picture on the blog, because he reads it every day now, right? Mine too, right? 🙂
I’m so inspired by your “excitement” about gaining 10 pounds! We’ve seen you savor every bite, sip and moment of the last month or so…and at least from here, it seems like it was absolutely worth it!

November 23, 2009 at 9:51 pmLove your positive attitude Jenna. The food you’ve gotten to eat has been out of this world, and a few extra pounds definitely won’t make a difference.
Plus, I bet with your brother’s passing you dropped some weight as well, so everything evens out in the end. Must try the banana ice cream, especially for the bf who doesn’t eat sugar.

November 23, 2009 at 9:54 pmThank you so much for sharing this on your blog.
You are such a beautiful person, both inside and out, and I bet this post will help us all realize that gaining a little weight is NEVER the end of the world.
Have a great Tuesday!

November 23, 2009 at 10:02 pmWhat a great post! It’s so refreshing to see someone with an attitude like yours because as I’m sure you know, it’s incredibly rare and not something that just happens. You have to want to live like that…and it’s clear you do 🙂 Bravo!

November 23, 2009 at 10:03 pmFrom your recent Cali photos, you make a 10lb weight gain look simply faaabulous. More power to ya. I think it’s quite refreshing and delightful to see someone enjoy, savor and relish the things you’ve been privy to lately and not freak out about indulging one night or refuse an exquisite meal because it might put them over their “calorie count” for the day. Much more interesting than the typical food blogger fodder if I say so myself.

November 23, 2009 at 10:21 pmI agree with everyone, you have an amazing attitude and look gorgeous in all of your recent pics. I too put on about 10 pounds and like the way I look and feel better. Initially I wanted to lose it, but my body wasn’t losing it and I figured it must be my healthy weight then and I feel better now too. Rock on Jenna!

November 23, 2009 at 10:35 pmIt’s wonderful that you are able to laugh about the 10pounds. A lot of people in the blog world would have a very hard time hearing that, so I’m sure it will be inspiring for many to hear your reaction. BFD looks yum yum!

November 23, 2009 at 10:38 pmHey Jenna, I’m thinking about trying Amazing Grass but was hoping since you’re the glorified blog rep (by all appearances!) you might be able to hook a sister up with a deal? Let me know haha

November 24, 2009 at 3:53 amJenna, I really appreciate and respect your attitude about the weight gain. You look fantastic, healthy, and above all else, happy. I agree entirely with you about our culture’s distorted view about what constitutes beauty. Many women sacrifice their health’s best interest in order to achieve their supposed “healthy weight,” which is so silly and backwards! For the past year I’ve been telling myself that I need to lose 10 pounds, even though my BMI and body fat percentage are in a healthy range. The epiphany came when I told my best friend my goal weight the other day, she assumed (from looking at me) that I was under it, and responded with, “So…..you want to gain weight?” Right then and there, I realized, “I’m a size 6, why is that a problem? Oh, that’s right, it isn’t.”
I’ve decided to take the plunge and order a pack of that Kodiak mix next payday. Your pancakes always look so scrumptious!

November 24, 2009 at 4:02 amUmmm, heck yes for BFD!!! I beleive I have mastered the BFD concept. We have this every single week in our house. Wednesday night BFD is what we live for! 🙂

November 24, 2009 at 4:31 amI’ve been reading your blog for a while now.
Just wanted to tell you how truly amazing it is that you have gained this weight and that you are fully embracing it. It is so important that we look at food as fuel… with the weight you have put on you have the energy to spin, you have the power to live every moment to the fullest, you can enjoy the small and big challenges life throws your way.
We all know this to be the truth deep down but somewhere along the way society and other factors blinds us to this simple truth.
Continue to be happy, Jenna 🙂

November 24, 2009 at 4:59 amYou *think* you like having curves?
Regardless, I’m glad you are healthy and happy.

November 24, 2009 at 5:04 amJenna,
It’s really refreshing to see someone with such a healthy attitude about a little weight gain. I think probably MOST women could take a lesson from you (including myself). And you’re right– it basically came from eating the most delicious meals on the planet!
In the pictures you’ve posted of yourself, you look beautiful, healthy, and happy!
Krissy - Single Serving
November 24, 2009 at 5:06 amI think enjoying food and life in general are all really healthy things. You look fabulous. A slight weight gain is nothing!! It’s a very small price to pay for all the deliciousness you’re getting to experience in your new home.
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg
November 24, 2009 at 5:08 amAlso– thanks for sharing that information with us. You certainly didn’t have to, and we all could have been left thinking, “Man, Jenna is SO lucky to be able to eat such rich food and not gain weight.” But you chose share…thus letting us know that you’re human, and you do gain weight at times, just like most of the rest of us 🙂
Erin
November 24, 2009 at 5:10 amThree cheers for you Jenna, and your healthy attitude towards your body! I think it’s so difficult to break that distorted mental image or what we think we “should” look like. We’ve been “should on” enough by society! I’m taking this mindset throughout the day with me. Thanks for the early morning pep talk!

November 24, 2009 at 5:17 amI’ll just reiiterate what everyone’s saying…10 lbs looks awesome on you! 😀
I gained 10-15 pounds over the past year and actually love the way I look and *feel* way better then before. We’re women…we’re *supposed* to have curves! 😀
Thanks for such a positive outlook and sending such a great message to all the girls and women out there…rock on!

November 24, 2009 at 5:18 amThis just confirms the fact that I need to quit my job in Michigan and move to California and start working for amazing cooks in order to gain the weight I need to gain. Sounds like a delicious plan to me!

November 24, 2009 at 5:25 amHaha I have gained 5-7 pounds since coming to college. Just when I was about to flip, a few people mentioned how defined my growing leg muscles now were, and now, like you, I’m pretty pumped!

November 24, 2009 at 5:26 amI never comment, but had to tell you that you are AWESOME!
Love the attitude.
I just started law school, and we all laugh at how four months has made us all chubbier. It’s more like a joke, and it’s actually really good for me!
I was so obsessed with staying the same weight last year when I had so much time to think about it, that it’s sooo nice to realize weight is not a big deal. I’m sure my weight will continue to fluctuate throughout my life!
I think it’s so important to remember 10 lbs doesn’t mean you’re just ballooning or something…it all works out!
Love this post!!

November 24, 2009 at 5:27 amjenna – you look truly beautiful right now. but if you want to lose the weight you will be able to – the food and wine you’ve shared with us since moving to california is far richer from what you were eating in florida. it is all up to you – whatever feels best.

November 24, 2009 at 5:52 amHappy to read your thoughts on this today! I recently had a little ephiphany about healthy eating, living and weightloss. (wrote about it here: http://juniperandsage.typepad.com/smallthings/2009/11/how-to-be-full.html)
It feels good to be coming to a good place about it. I’ve loved reading your blog b/c of the fact that you seem to ENJOY life so well and really live it. Good for you!

November 24, 2009 at 5:52 amGlad for you Jenna! I’ve been thinking that you look healthier! You are gorgeous! And you radiate happiness! Now I just need to get a Vita Mix! I tried to make the Banana soft serve in my magic bullet, but it isn’t powerful enough! I saw a demonstration at Costco last weekend and was wishing I had the money for one! It was really amazing! I decided to start putting $50 a month away until I can get one! And I want to put my new Amazing Grass purchase into some good smoothies!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving Jenna!

November 24, 2009 at 5:52 amI totally agree about the whole screwed up perception of beauty thing our society has going. But, to give our honest opinion, I think you should post before and after pictures of your butt, since you say that is where the fat went, so we can tell you if it really made a good change. JUST KIDDING!
I’m just playing, but seriously though, good for you for feeling great about the changes your body is experiencing, and accepting it for what it is. Unfortunately, I have been eating too many desserts recently, and have probably put back on 10 lbs, but somehow I doubt it looks as good on me…
Amy
November 24, 2009 at 5:53 amJenna~ Thank you for such a positive post! Too often we get caught up in the numbers and don’t allow ourselves to see the full picture– that we are really loving life and enjoying ourselves to the fullest. You look absolutely beautiful!

November 24, 2009 at 6:06 amJenna! You are so fab. I love, love, love this post. I actually gained an estimated 10 pounds in Cali over the summer, too. I decided to keep it! Having a booty is nice for a change, right? Haha so happy to have such a positive message out there for us! Thanks!

November 24, 2009 at 6:09 amRock those 10 pounds, girl! The same thing happened to me, and it turns out my boyfriend likes my curves better 🙂 Plus you’re eating more amazing food on a regular basis than most of us every will, so it’s the best of both worlds.

November 24, 2009 at 6:11 amThank you for your honesty Jenna! I totally agree that delicious food is well worth a few extra pounds. We only have one life to live and we should enjoy each and every part of it – including the best food we can get our hands on! :O)

November 24, 2009 at 6:17 amJenna, thanks for your honesty about your weight gain! It is really refreshing to read! In college, I definitely over-exercised and restricted, and since then I have gained about 10 lbs. The only place I can honestly see weight gain is my butt – and it’s a good thing! I feel stronger now and have received multiple compliments! You look fab … and maybe this really is your “happy weight” … I mean, look at how you’re living 🙂

November 24, 2009 at 6:18 amI really hope you are okay with your weight gain. A ton of women look to your site for motivation and inspiration so I would hate for you to declare acceptance and then starve to lose the weight ala Tyra Banks or Jennifer love hewitt. Enjoy your life, you only get to live once! 😉

November 24, 2009 at 6:18 amJenna, you are awesome! Thanks for sharing your acceptance of your new lifestyle, and that it’s okay to LIVE LIFE and enjoy yourself without stressing out. From all the pictures you’ve put on your blog you’re still as beautiful as ever…. now I just need to remember that for myself, and the 10 pounds that I am constantly struggling with. You go girl!

November 24, 2009 at 6:18 amjenna, i LOVE you. this is a completely awkward comment considering i don’t know you, but honestly, it is about time someone came out and said, “i don’t care what i weigh” and actually prove it. it’s so easy for those of us who are ok with our weight to say we’re comfortable in our skin – but then, how would we react if we did in fact gain ten pounds? you’re gorgeous, you’re living life, and i could pretty much gush about your fabulous attitude for a long, long time. thank you for blogging, seriously. this community needs you and your strong voice!

November 24, 2009 at 6:44 amI love your positive attitude. Who cares about the extra weight anyway? Just because someone weighs 100 pounds, it doesn’t mean they aren’t an @sshole. Your weight doesn’t make you the person you are. You’re pretty terrific by the way!

November 24, 2009 at 6:53 amHi Jenna! I love your blog and I just wanted to say that you are such an inspiration. I am recovering from anorexia and am really struggling with gaining about 10 more pounds that my body really needs. You are helping me to see that gaining a little weight can help be healthy and beautiful. I love good food and need to be more comfortable with my own body. Weight is just a number!

November 24, 2009 at 7:00 amSo, you gained 10 pounds..you’re keeping active and generally eat pretty darn healthy. Also, you’re happy. Happiness and healthiness is what we all strive for. So way to go girl, you look great! It’s so fun to read about your new adventure and seeing how happy you are. We love seeing your eats in Cali, and I realized while there that you never really eat a bad meal! YUM! 🙂
You’re wonderful, thank you for inspiring me each and everyday!

November 24, 2009 at 7:39 amJenna…I know exactly what you mean about the ten pounds. Last year, I was on a kick where I wanted to weigh 110 pounds. I went from 120 to 110, and (thought) I was so happy! Unfortunately, I was also SO hungry. I measured every single thing that went into my body. I would restrain myself to the point of being miserable. I even found myself snapping at my loved ones. I was not fun to be around! After awhile, I started to let up a little bit and became less restrictive about what I was eating. I now stay around 114 to 116, and feel SO much happier, because I can eat what I want (in moderation), and even indulge in decadent desserts every now and then. The funny thing is, all of the size 2’s that I bought when I was 110 still fit just fine. I look back at my former self now, and shake my head. I cannot believe I was making myself miserable just to define myself by a number!!!!

November 24, 2009 at 7:41 amI love that you said you’re thankful for a strong body! To be healthy and strong allows us to do so much: run, hike, spin, play, stretch, swim and dance! I try to remind myself how lucky I am for that everyday. Numbers and scales don’t mean much; it’s all about what you can do and how you feel. It sounds to me that you’ve been feeling energized, inspired and simply loving life!

November 24, 2009 at 7:43 amFabulous Fabulous Fabulous! That is all I have to say that you are. You look good, feel good. Life is not about a number or what or how much you eat. Never ever worry about that!! You are too important and special a person 🙂 Yay to butts!!! Mine has grown too 😉

November 24, 2009 at 7:45 amJenna you are such a beautiful woman- inside and out, no matter if you have gained 10 lbs or not. Your body enables you to do the things that you love to do. So I say.. embrace it! If it makes you feel more confident and sexy to have curves.. then work it girl!
The photos that you have posted since you moved to California have been so beautiful and you look happy!! SO happy! which is the most important thing, above all.

November 24, 2009 at 7:49 amYou look great even gaining 10 pounds! As long as you’re happy that’s all that matters. That banana soft serve looks awesome, how exactly do you do that? Just puree frozen bananas? Do you add anything else to it?
I started drinking Amazing Grass and it’s pretty good! I’m not brave enough to make green monsters with spinach and what not but it sure is good with frozen fruits! 🙂
Have a great Thanksgiving!

November 24, 2009 at 7:52 amYou know what, kudos to you Jenna- what a great and positive attitude you have regarding your gain. From what we can see on this side of the blog, those pounds were earned by some DELISH food that I’m super jealous of!! 🙂 Have a great day!

November 24, 2009 at 7:52 amGood for you! I totally agree about the body image bit… curves are awesome. I’ve started to realize that if you’re eating great food, you’re bound to look great too, regardless of your weight. I think you might be living my dream life out there in Cali, so live it up, girl. 10 pounds is a small price for some serious happiness (and serious YUM)!

November 24, 2009 at 8:26 amYou.are.uh-mazing. THank you so much for posting this. I have put on an additional 10 lbs over the last year (after gaining an initial 7 to get to my goal weight in my treatment for anorexia) and it has been such a painful experience. In the past couple of months, I have been trying to embrace it. Seeing that even you can gain weight shows me that it isn’t neccessarily that I’ve been doing something wrong to gain the weight, people’s bodies change! Thank you thank you thank you. And you look absolutely gorgeous. I have been reading your blog since day 1, and rooting for you every single step of the way. I am so incredibly happy that you are doing well and feeling good. You deserve it, beautiful woman!!! Much much love.

November 24, 2009 at 8:45 amA worthwhile gain in my opinion. You are eating some of the best food I have ever seen! If you are happy and healthy, the number doesn’t matter.

November 24, 2009 at 8:56 amHey Jenna,
I’m glad you posted about your weight gain (as taboo as that subject may be). I have always thought you were gorgeous, but I’ll admit I was a little worried that you were promoting an unattainable body image on this site. Embracing a 10 lb gain is just what this site, and really our skinny-minded society needs. And if anyone can rock curves, it is you!
Jennie {in Wonderland}
November 24, 2009 at 8:57 amYou are glowing! I didn’t notice the 10 pounds… but then, why would I? And it doesn’t matter, obviously. You’re seizing life, enjoying yourself, and living it up. 10 pounds of happiness, it sounds like!! Plus you just always look pretty 🙂
BTW: those pancakes look to-die-for.

November 24, 2009 at 9:01 amGood for you! I love your positive outlook on this, you are enjoying yourself to the fullest, so whats 10 pounds anyway?? Nothing!!
Michelle
November 24, 2009 at 9:08 amWeight is such a funny thing. Last year I was 25lbs thinner than I am no and I was MISERABLE!!!!!!!!! I am 25lbs heavier than I was a year ago (with about 15lbs to lose) and I am the HAPPIEST I have ever been. Weight is one measure for some about happiness. The moments, the feelings in our soul, the food we eat, the company we keeps is another measure of our happiness. May you continue to shine and love life.
Jenny
November 24, 2009 at 9:24 amI don’t comment often, but I am ALWAYS reading! I just wanted to commend you for this post! Not because you are content with your body (which is great) but because you make a distinct point about society in general. Who decides what’s beautiful and what’s not?
I can say that without a doubt you have influenced my view on life sooo positively in the past few months. As a good food and wine lover, I do struggle with truly enjoying myself at times. But you have set such a great example and I am very thankful to have found your blog.
Keep enjoying California and sharing your amazing experience with us as well! 🙂

November 24, 2009 at 9:32 amThanks for such a great and ballsy post. Bravo for celebrating and not obsessing over a little extra weight. Our views on beauty, health, and weight are so skewed, myself I cannot imagine in your state of mind now but I can hope for one day! I panic over even the possibility of weight gain and I know it effects what I consume and the pleasures I avoid because of it. And I’m really glad it hasn’t turned you off to California 🙂 I do think I eat more healthfully here than elsewhere and not just because it’s my home. I believe I do have easier access to healthy and diverse foods than other places in the country that I visit.

November 24, 2009 at 9:35 amJenna,
I read everyday but don’t comment, but I wanted to chime in along with everyone else and say thank you for this post. You are radiating happiness, and the fact that you were honest about this and have no regrets also reflects your confidence. Girl, you got in goin’ on!
You are such an inspiration to me (and I know, others) who STILL thinks from time to time that certain foods are “bad.” Keep doin’ what you’re doin’….you are making a huge difference, more than you know! 🙂

November 24, 2009 at 12:14 pmIt kinda makes me jump with giddiness and glee at the fact that you’re getting Kevin, a Top Chef contestant to make banana soft serve! There are so many blogger food tips I am going to take with me on my culinary school journey.. 😉

November 24, 2009 at 1:40 pmI’m so happy you shared this. I too have gained some lbs, probably 7 or 10, and even thought I’m only 17 I’m perfectly ok with it. I was actually shocked when I realized how ok with the weight gain I was, and then started to get a little worried thinking I should be freaking out about it since many girls my age would. But now after reading your post and seeing how nicely I’m filling out my clothes (cough…chest…cough 😉 ), I’m definitely perfectly fine with it. I’m still healthy, fit, and confident (maybe even more so than before??) But congrats girl, I’ve been reading your blog for months now and I’m amazed at well… everything. And thanks for showing its ok to gain a little weight.

November 24, 2009 at 2:42 pmHey Jenna,
I just started reading your blog recently and have to say that I’m hooked, so please keep eating and writing. 🙂 I’ve probably gained 20 lbs since I started blogging because every time I eat, I think, “hey, you’re doing everyone else a big service!” haha

November 24, 2009 at 3:42 pm🙂 you rock jenna. plus, now you have to eat more than you did when you lived in florida to maintain the weight you are at now. = double benefit; you look better plus you get to eat more, i envy you

November 30, 2009 at 3:05 pmI just wanted to jump on the Thank you” band wagon. I really appreciate you posting about your weight. I spent about 2 years losing 30 lbs (I needed to, I was over-weight and didn’t eat right or exercise) and am now making the transition from calorie counting to eating in moderation. Your blog is an inspiration to me and it is so nice to be able to see what a healthy attitude about food and fitness looks like.
Thanks so much!
